Toyota 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 Engine

The Toyota 2GR-FE is a 3.5L V6 built from 2005 to 2016, powering the Camry V6, Highlander, Sienna, Avalon, RAV4 V6 and Lexus ES 350 and RX 350. Used 2GR-FE engines run $1,400 to $2,800. It is one of the most durable V6 engines Toyota has built — but early units had a rubber oil supply hose that Toyota recalled, and that is the first thing to check.

The oil line issue — check this first

Early 2GR-FE units used a rubber section in the VVT-i oil supply line. Over time that rubber can crack and rupture, dumping oil rapidly. If the driver doesn't stop immediately, the engine can be destroyed.

Toyota recalled the affected units and replaced the rubber section with an all-metal line. Roughly 2007 through 2010 model years were involved, depending on vehicle.

What to check before buying

  • Has the metal oil line been fitted? Look at the line running to the VVT-i unit — metal, not rubber.
  • Any history of oil starvation or the oil light coming on.
  • Later units from around 2011 onward shipped with the metal line from the factory.

Every 2GR-FE we ship is inspected for this specifically, and we tell you what we found.

2GR Family — which one do you have?

The 2GR badge covers several variants. They are not interchangeable.

Code Fuel system Used in
2GR-FE Port injection Camry V6, Highlander, Sienna, Avalon, RAV4 V6, Lexus ES 350 / RX 350
2GR-FSE D-4S direct + port Lexus IS 350, GS 350
2GR-FKS D-4S, revised 2017+ Camry, Highlander, Tacoma V6
2GR-FXE Atkinson cycle, hybrid Highlander Hybrid, Lexus RX 450h

Do not order on "3.5 V6" alone. A 2GR-FKS will not drop into a 2GR-FE vehicle — different fuel system, different management. We match by VIN before anything ships.

How to Identify Your Engine

Read the 8th digit of your VIN, then confirm against year and model. On most Toyota applications the 2GR-FE appears as code K, but this varies by platform and year.

The reliable check: send us your full 17-character VIN. Toyota VIN coding varies more by market and platform than most manufacturers, and the engine code stamped on the block is the final word. Text your VIN to +1 (361) 470-5276 and we'll confirm in minutes, or browse all Toyota used engines to see what's available for your year.

Other Known Issues

Water pump

A common wear item on higher-mileage units. Worth replacing during installation while access is easy — the engine is already out.

Timing chain

The 2GR-FE uses a chain rather than a belt, which is a durability advantage. Chain guides and tensioners still wear at high mileage, so inspect them during the swap.

Carbon buildup — 2GR-FSE and FKS only

Direct-injected variants accumulate deposits on intake valves. The port-injected 2GR-FE does not have this problem, because fuel washes across the valves.

Oil consumption

Not a widespread issue on this engine. If a donor shows heavy consumption, treat it as a red flag rather than normal wear.

Which Years to Buy

  • 2011–2016 — the safest buy. Metal oil line from the factory, most refined version of the engine.
  • 2007–2010 — good engines, but confirm the oil line recall was carried out.
  • 2005–2006 — earliest units, cheapest. Check service history carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Toyota 2GR-FE a reliable engine?

Yes. It is widely regarded as one of Toyota's most durable V6 engines, commonly reaching 250,000 to 300,000 miles with regular maintenance. Its one significant weakness was a rubber VVT-i oil supply line on early units, which Toyota recalled and replaced with an all-metal line.

What is the 2GR-FE oil line problem?

Early units used a rubber section in the VVT-i oil supply line. That rubber can crack and rupture, dumping oil rapidly and destroying the engine if the driver doesn't stop immediately. Toyota recalled affected vehicles and fitted an all-metal line. Roughly 2007 to 2010 model years were involved. Later units shipped with the metal line from the factory.

What's the difference between 2GR-FE, 2GR-FKS and 2GR-FSE?

The 2GR-FE uses port injection and appears in the Camry V6, Highlander, Sienna and Lexus ES 350 and RX 350. The 2GR-FSE uses D-4S direct plus port injection in the Lexus IS 350 and GS 350. The 2GR-FKS is the revised D-4S version in 2017 and later vehicles. They are not interchangeable — different fuel systems and engine management.

How long does a 2GR-FE last?

Commonly 250,000 to 300,000 miles with regular oil changes. The timing chain is a durability advantage over belt-driven engines. Water pumps are the most common wear item and are worth replacing during installation.

Will a 2GR-FE from a Lexus fit my Camry?

Often yes, since the Lexus ES 350 and RX 350 share the 2GR-FE with the Camry V6 and Highlander. Accessory mounting and wiring can differ by application, so confirm by VIN before ordering. Send us your VIN and we'll tell you exactly what will bolt in.

How many miles is too many for a used 2GR-FE?

Under 120,000 miles is a strong buy. 120,000 to 180,000 is workable on a compression-tested unit with service records, because this engine handles high mileage well. Every listing shows actual mileage read from the donor odometer.

Do you have other Toyota engines and transmissions?

Yes. We stock over 1,000 used Toyota engines covering the 2AR-FE 2.5L, 2AZ-FE 2.4L, 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 and 1ZZ and 2ZR 1.8L, plus used Toyota transmissions for the Camry, Corolla, RAV4 and Tacoma.
