Cadillac Escalade Used Engines

Escalade engines come out of the GM full-size truck pool, which is good news for availability: a correctly coded Yukon Denali or Suburban unit of the same generation fits. What is specific to the Escalade is that it almost always took the high-output option — the 6.0L LQ9 where the Tahoe had a 5.3L, the 6.2L L92 where the Yukon had a 5.3L — so the engine you need is usually the larger one for that year.

How to pick the right one

The 8th VIN digit and the model year. On the 2002–2006 trucks, the 6.0L came in a standard LQ4 and a high-output LQ9 with different pistons and a higher compression ratio, and the Escalade almost always had the LQ9 — the two will physically interchange but the calibration and the power will not match. On the 2007–2014 trucks the 6.2L L92 and L9H differ in Active Fuel Management, and an AFM engine will not run correctly on a non-AFM calibration. If the truck is a 2009–2013 Hybrid, the 6.0L LZ1 is a dedicated part.

What usually fails on these engines

The 2007–2014 6.2L in its L9H form shares the AFM lifter failure that defines this era of GM V8: the deactivating lifters collapse, the camshaft lobe follows, and the first sign is a tick at idle that becomes a misfire. High oil consumption from the AFM oil deflector and ring design is common on the same engines. On the 2015-up L86 the lifter issue persists in a revised form. The 2002–2006 LQ9 is the most durable of the group. Every unit here is compression and leak-down tested, and we note the AFM configuration.

Cadillac Escalade used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Cadillac Escalade use?

Across 1999 to today the Cadillac Escalade was built with 5.7L V8, 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8, 6.0L V8 hybrid, 6.2L EcoTec3 and 3.0L Duramax. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Cadillac Escalade?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Cadillac Escalade?
