Chevy Camaro Used Engines
Camaro engines are bought as often for a build as for a repair, so what matters here is knowing exactly which generation of small block you are looking at. Four different V8 architectures wear a Chevrolet badge across these cars — the Gen I of the third-generation car, the Gen II LT1, the Gen III LS1 and the Gen V LT1 — and the name LT1 is used by two of them, twenty years apart, on completely unrelated engines.

How to pick the right one
Name the generation and the RPO code, not the displacement. "5.7L Camaro" covers the Gen I L98, the Gen II LT1 and the Gen III LS1, which have three different blocks, three different firing arrangements in the accessory drive and three different engine management systems. On 6.2L cars, the LS3 is the manual-transmission engine and the L99 is the automatic with Active Fuel Management — they are not interchangeable without changing the calibration. If you are buying a sixth-generation SS, the Gen V LT1 is direct injected and carries its own high-pressure fuel system.
What usually fails on these engines
On the Gen II LT1 the signature failure is the Optispark distributor, mounted at the front of the block behind the water pump, which fails when the water pump seal lets coolant onto it — an engine-out job on some cars. The LS1 is robust; what we see is valve spring failure on early examples and the occasional oil pump. On the 2010–2015 3.6L LLT and LFX, timing chain stretch and high-pressure fuel pump wear are the issues. On the L99, the AFM lifters behave exactly as they do in GM trucks. Everything here is compression and leak-down tested.

Chevy Camaro used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Chevy Camaro use?
Across 1990 to 2024 the Chevy Camaro was built with 3.1L V6, 5.0L V8, 5.7L V8, 3.4L V6, 3.8L V6, 3.6L V6, 6.2L V8, 6.2L supercharged and 2.0L turbo / 3.6L V6. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Chevy Camaro?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my Chevy Camaro?
