Chevrolet Equinox Used Engines

Equinox engines are the same parts as the GMC Terrain, so the pool is twice what the model name suggests - a correctly coded Terrain engine of the same year fits. There are three distinct eras. The 2005-2009 car ran the 3.4 and 3.6 V6. The 2010-2017 car moved to the 2.4 Ecotec four as the volume engine with a 3.0 and later 3.6 V6 above it. From 2018 the range is turbocharged only: the 1.5 LYX and the 2.0 LTG, with a 1.6 diesel for two years.

How to pick the right one

Establish the generation first: 2005-2009, 2010-2017 or 2018-onward, because the three are different vehicles and nothing crosses the lines. On a 2010-2017 car, tell us whether it is the 2.4 four or the V6, and for the V6 whether it is the 3.0 LF1 of 2010-2011 or the 3.6 LFX from 2012 - they are different engines. On a 2018-onward car the 1.5 and 2.0 turbos are separate blocks with separate turbos and separate management. Terrain engines of the same year are the same parts, so check that page too. Send the VIN and we read the eighth character against the build.

What usually fails on these engines

The 2.4 Ecotec is the one to know about. It consumes oil through worn piston rings and a failing positive crankcase ventilation system, and when the oil level drops the timing chain is the next casualty - GM faced a class action over oil consumption on this engine family and a replacement is often the honest answer rather than another ring job. The balance chain on the 2.4 is also a known wear item and rattles on a cold start. On the 3.6 LFX, watch the timing chain and the variable valve timing solenoids. On the 1.5 LYX turbo, the known item is the turbo coolant line and carbon on the intake valves. Every engine here is compression and leak-down tested first.

Chevrolet Equinox used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Chevrolet Equinox use?

Across 2005 to today the Chevrolet Equinox was built with 3.4L LNJ V6, 3.6L LY7 V6, 2.4L Ecotec LAF / LEA / LUK, 3.0L LF1 V6, 3.6L LFX V6, 1.5L LYX turbo, 2.0L LTG turbo and 1.6L LH7 diesel. How do I know which engine is in my Chevrolet Equinox?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
