Chevy Equinox Used Transmissions
Equinox transmissions split at 2010. The 2005–2009 car uses an Aisin AF33 five-speed, which is a Japanese unit GM bought in and which shares nothing with what followed. From 2010 the car uses the 6T45 or 6T70, and from 2018 the 2.0 turbo cars added a nine-speed. The GMC Terrain of the same years uses the same transmissions, which widens the pool usefully.

How to pick the right one
Model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO code. The 2009-to-2010 change is absolute — the Aisin AF33 and the 6T45 are unrelated. On the 2010–2017 cars the code also carries the final drive ratio, and fitting a 2.77 unit where the car had 3.39 changes the gearing and the speedometer. Front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions carry different output and transfer units. A correctly coded GMC Terrain unit of the same year fits.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The 6T70 has a signature failure worth knowing: the wave plate in the 3-5 reverse clutch assembly fractures, which takes third, fifth and reverse at once and then circulates debris. A flare on an upshift or a shudder is the warning. The 6T45 is the lighter unit and what comes in on those is the torque converter and the pump. The Aisin AF33 in the early cars is a reasonably durable transmission whose usual need is a solenoid and a valve body rather than a replacement. On the 9T50, shift quality complaints were addressed with recalibrations.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Chevy Equinox used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Chevy Equinox use?
Across 2005 to 2024 the Chevy Equinox was built with Aisin AF33, 6T45, 6T70, 6T45 / 6T70 AWD, 6T70 / 6T75, 9T50 / 9T60 and 6-speed auto. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Chevy Equinox?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Chevy Equinox?
