Chevy Suburban Used Engines
Suburban engines come out of the GM full-size truck pool, so a correctly coded Silverado or Tahoe unit of the same generation will fit. What is particular to the Suburban is the three-quarter-ton option: the 2500 Suburban took the 8.1L big block and the 6.0L where the 1500 did not, and the feed treats those as separate fitments. Settle the half-ton versus three-quarter-ton question before you settle the engine.

How to pick the right one
Tell us 1500 or 2500 first, then the 8th VIN digit. A 2003 Suburban 1500 and a 2003 Suburban 2500 do not share an engine, and a 6.0L out of a 2500 will not simply drop into a 1500. On the 2007–2014 trucks, Active Fuel Management is the other thing to settle: an AFM engine and a non-AFM engine are not interchangeable without the matching lifters, camshaft and calibration. If you are buying a 6.5L diesel, confirm turbo against non-turbo, because they differ in the pistons as well as the induction.
What usually fails on these engines
The 2007–2014 5.3L is the Suburban engine that most often needs replacing: the AFM lifters collapse, the camshaft lobe follows, and oil consumption from the AFM oil deflector and the ring design is high even before that. On the 1996–1999 L31 Vortec, the intake manifold gasket and the plastic coolant fittings are the age-related failures rather than anything internal, and those engines frequently run past 250,000 miles. On the 8.1L, the exhaust manifold bolts shear and the cost is labour rather than the engine. Every unit here is compression and leak-down tested.

Chevy Suburban used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Chevy Suburban use?
Across 1992 to today the Chevy Suburban was built with 5.7L V8, 7.4L V8, 6.5L diesel, 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 8.1L V8, 6.2L V8, 5.3L / 6.2L EcoTec3 and 5.3L / 6.2L / 3.0L diesel. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Chevy Suburban?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my Chevy Suburban?
Tell us 1500 or 2500 first, then the 8th VIN digit. A 2003 Suburban 1500 and a 2003 Suburban 2500 do not share an engine, and a 6.0L out of a 2500 will not simply drop into a 1500.
