Chevy Suburban Used Transmissions

Suburban transmissions come out of the GM full-size truck pool, so a correctly coded Silverado or Tahoe unit of the same generation fits. The split that is specific to this vehicle is the half-ton against the three-quarter-ton: a 1500 Suburban takes a 4L60E where a 2500 takes a 4L80E, and those two share nothing. Settle that before the model year.

How to pick the right one

Half-ton or three-quarter-ton first, then the RPO code off the glovebox sticker, then two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The 4L60E and 4L80E are both "4-speed automatic" in a listing and have different cases, bellhousings and output shafts. On the 2007–2014 trucks the 6L80 and 6L90 look alike and differ in capacity and internals, so the code matters there too. Four-wheel-drive units use a different tailhousing for the transfer case.

What usually fails on these transmissions

The 4L60E is the one most often replaced in a Suburban: the 3-4 clutch pack burns and the sun gear shell splits, which costs third and fourth. In a heavy vehicle it happens sooner. The 4L80E is a far stronger unit and when it fails it is usually the forward clutch after a long life. The 6L80 rarely fails outright but develops torque converter shudder as the fluid breaks down, felt as a light-throttle vibration around 35 to 45 mph. The 8L90 had a documented shift judder that GM addressed with a revised fluid and recalibration.

Chevy Suburban used transmissions - frequently asked questions

Which transmissions did the Chevy Suburban use?

Across 1992 to today the Chevy Suburban was built with 4L60E, 4L80E, 4L60E / 4L65E, 6L80, 6L90, 8L90 and 10L80. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.

How do I identify the right transmission for my Chevy Suburban?

Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.

Will a transmission from a different year fit my Chevy Suburban?
