Chevrolet TrailBlazer Used Engines

These are engines for the 2002–2009 TrailBlazer, the midsize body-on-frame SUV built on GM's GMT360 platform. Chevrolet revived the TrailBlazer name much later for a small crossover, and that is a different vehicle with nothing in common mechanically — if yours is a 2021 or newer, nothing here fits it. The long-wheelbase three-row version, the TrailBlazer EXT, is listed alongside the standard body and runs to 2006.

Three engines appear across these listings. The great majority are the 4.2 litre inline six, GM's Atlas engine, option LL8 — it was the standard engine for the whole run. The 5.3 and 6.0 litre V8s are the exceptions, fitted to the heavier and higher-performance versions.

Chevrolet TrailBlazer used engines — options by year

Years listed Engine VIN code (8th digit) Option Notes
2002–2009 4.2L inline six S LL8 The Atlas six, standard across the range
2003–2004 5.3L V8 P — EXT only in these years
2005–2008 5.3L V8 M LH6 Carries Active Fuel Management
2006–2009 6.0L V8 H LS2 The SS engine

How to pick the right one

The eighth character of the VIN settles it, and on this vehicle it matters more than usual because the 5.3 changed code mid-run: VIN P on the 2003 and 2004 EXT, VIN M from 2005. They are not the same engine specification. The 4.2 six is a single option code throughout, so for most TrailBlazers the year and VIN S is the whole answer. Check whether yours is an EXT as well, because the EXT was offered with V8s in years when the standard body was not. The 6.0 is the SS engine and appears only from 2006.

What usually goes wrong on these engines

The 4.2 Atlas six has a good reputation for the bottom end, and when one of these trucks needs an engine it is often for something that started elsewhere. The documented weak points are the air injection pump, which sets a P0410 code, and the electronic throttle body, neither of which needs an engine to fix — so diagnose before you buy. Where the 4.2 does fail outright it is usually a cracked cylinder head or a failed head gasket after prolonged overheating. On the 5.3 LH6 from 2005, Active Fuel Management is the issue to know about: the system's lifters can collapse and the engine can consume oil heavily, and a cylinder deactivation fault is a common reason these get replaced. The 6.0 LS2 has no comparable systemic weakness and is the strongest of the three.

Chevrolet TrailBlazer used engines — frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Chevrolet TrailBlazer use?

These listings cover the 4.2L Atlas inline six (VIN S, option LL8), the 5.3L V8 (VIN P on 2003–2004, VIN M with option LH6 from 2005) and the 6.0L V8 (VIN H, option LS2). The 4.2 six accounts for the great majority.

Will these fit a 2021 or newer Chevrolet TrailBlazer?

No. The name was revived for a small crossover built on an entirely different platform with different engines. Everything listed here belongs to the 2002–2009 midsize SUV.

What is the difference between VIN P and VIN M on the 5.3?

VIN P is the 5.3 fitted to the 2003 and 2004 TrailBlazer EXT. VIN M is the 5.3 from 2005 onward, option LH6, which carries Active Fuel Management. They are different engine specifications and the VIN character is how you tell them apart.

What is Active Fuel Management and why does it matter?

It is GM's cylinder deactivation system, fitted to the LH6 5.3 from 2005. The lifters used by the system can collapse and the engine can consume oil heavily, which is a frequent reason these engines get replaced. It is worth knowing whether your engine has it before you buy.

What comes with a used Chevrolet TrailBlazer engine?

Each listing states its condition and its mileage options. Fitment is matched to your VIN before the order goes out, every unit carries a written warranty of 6 months, extendable to 3 years, parts only, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
