Dodge Dakota Used Engines
Dakota engines divide at 2000, when the Magnum family gave way to PowerTech. Before that you have the 3.9L V6 and the 5.2L and 5.9L V8s, all pushrod Magnums sharing a great deal of hardware. After it you have the 3.7L V6 and the 4.7L V8, overhead-cam engines that share nothing with the Magnums. Our Dakota listings also appear under two naming patterns in the feed, so you will see both "Dakota" and "Truck-Dakota" in the results below — both are the same vehicle.

How to pick the right one
Magnum or PowerTech first, then the 8th VIN digit. On the 4.7L there is a second split that matters a great deal: the 2008-up VIN P engine has different cylinder heads, a different camshaft and a higher compression ratio than the earlier VIN N, and the two will not interchange. On Magnum trucks, the 3.9L V6 and the 5.2L V8 share a bore and a great deal of hardware, which is part of why both remain easy to source. Tell us 2WD or 4WD as well, because the oil pan and front accessory layout differ.
What usually fails on these engines
The 4.7L PowerTech is the Dakota engine that most often needs replacing. It runs hot, the cooling system has little margin, and the heads crack between the valve seats on engines that have been overheated — which is most of them by this age. Sludging from extended oil changes is the other common cause of death. The Magnums are the opposite: unremarkable, long-lived, and let down by the plenum pan gasket under the intake, which lets oil into the intake and is a gasket job rather than an engine job. Every unit here is compression and leak-down tested.
