Ford E450 and E550 Used Engines
These are engines for the Ford E450 and E550 Super Duty, the heaviest chassis in the family Ford sold as the Econoline and later badged E-Series. These are not passenger vans. The E450 and E550 were built as cutaway and stripped chassis for bodies to be mounted on — box trucks, ambulances, shuttle buses, motorhomes and tow units — so the vehicle you are working on may carry a body with no Ford badge on it at all and still be one of these underneath.
Every listing here carries the Super Duty designation, which on this chassis is part of the model name rather than a trim level, and the range runs from 1996 to 2003. The E450 covers the whole span. The E550 appears only in 2002 and 2003, and only with the two largest engines — if you have an E550 the choice is the 6.8 litre V10 or the 7.3 litre Power Stroke diesel and nothing else.
Ford E450 and E550 Super Duty used engines — options by year
| Years listed | Engine | VIN code (8th digit) | Fitted to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1996–2003 | 7.3L V8 diesel | F | E450 across the span, E550 in 2002–2003 |
| 1997–2003 | 6.8L V10 | S | Listed as 10-415; E450 and, from 2002, E550 |
| 2002–2003 | 5.4L V8 | L | Triton, gasoline — E450 only |
| 2003 | 5.4L V8 | M | CNG — E450 only |
The 7.3 litre diesel listed here is the Power Stroke throughout, VIN F — this chassis never carried the earlier mechanical IDI engine, which had been discontinued before the E450 appeared. That makes this range simpler than the E350 in one useful respect: there is only one 7.3 to identify.
How to pick the right one
Start with the chassis badge, because E450 and E550 are not interchangeable even in the two years they overlap, and then read the eighth character of the VIN. The engine choice on a working chassis is usually obvious from the fuel it burns, but the splits inside each engine are where orders go wrong on this vehicle, and there are more of them here than on any other E-Series model.
The 7.3 diesel is listed by emissions specification, with California, Federal and Low emissions as separate entries, and from 1998 it divides again on whether an exhaust pressure valve is fitted. For 1999 it splits on build date at 12/6/98 and 12/7/98, with the Low emissions version from 12/7/98 listed separately from the earlier ones. The 6.8 V10 splits at 1/11/98 and 1/12/98 for the 1998 model year. From 2000 the V10 is listed with and without an EGR valve. None of these is a cosmetic difference — emissions hardware changes the manifolds, the sensors and the engine management the unit expects to be connected to.
One practical note specific to this chassis: because these were sold as cutaways to body builders, the vehicle in front of you may have a VIN on the Ford chassis plate and a separate plate from the body manufacturer. The Ford VIN is the one that identifies the engine. Send it and we confirm the engine code against your vehicle before the order ships.
What usually goes wrong on these engines
The 7.3 Power Stroke has the strongest reputation of any diesel Ford put in this chassis and it is earned — the bottom end runs to very high mileage and these engines commonly outlast the bodies mounted on them. What actually fails is peripheral and mostly fixable without an engine: injectors, glow plugs and the glow plug relay, the camshaft position sensor, which strands the vehicle without warning and is a known pattern failure, and the injector driver module. Before buying a long block, rule those out, because a no-start on a 7.3 is far more often a sensor than a dead engine. Where the engine itself does go, it is usually a cracked cylinder head or injector cup leakage after a long commercial life.
The 6.8 V10 is a two-valve modular engine and shares the family failure: the spark plug threads can strip out of the aluminium cylinder head, because the plug is held by only a few threads in the casting, and a plug ejecting under load damages the head rather than just the plug. On a chassis this heavy the engine spends its life under load, which makes the failure more likely rather than less. Timing chain guides and tensioners wear and rattle on cold start. The 5.4 litre Triton behaves the same way and for the same reasons. On any of these, exhaust manifold studs shearing is common and is a nuisance rather than a reason to replace an engine. Every unit we list is listed as tested and ready to install.

Ford E450 and E550 Super Duty used engines — frequently asked questions
What is a Ford E450 or E550 Super Duty?
They are the heaviest chassis in the Ford Econoline and E-Series van family, built as cutaway and stripped chassis rather than finished vans. Bodies were mounted on them by other manufacturers, so the same chassis turns up as a box truck, an ambulance, a shuttle bus, a motorhome or a tow unit.
Which engines did the E450 and E550 use?
The 7.3L Power Stroke diesel (VIN F) from 1996 to 2003 and the 6.8L V10 (VIN S) from 1997 to 2003 across both chassis. The E450 also had the 5.4L Triton V8 in gasoline form (VIN L) for 2002 and 2003 and in CNG form (VIN M) for 2003.
Can I fit an E350 engine to an E450?
Sometimes, but not on the badge alone. The 6.8 V10 and the 7.3 Power Stroke appear on both chassis, so the engine itself can be common — but the emissions specification, the EGR configuration and the build-date version all have to match, and those are listed separately for good reason. Match on VIN character and on the listed qualifiers rather than on model.
Why is the 7.3L diesel listed under several different emissions versions?
Because the emissions hardware changes the engine. California, Federal and Low emissions versions are separate entries, and from 1998 the listings divide again on whether an exhaust pressure valve is fitted. The manifolds, sensors and engine management differ between them, so the version has to match what your chassis was built as.
What comes with a used Ford E450 or E550 engine?
Each listing states its condition and its mileage options. Fitment is matched to your VIN before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty of 3 months on units up to and including model year 2000 and 6 months on 2001 and newer, extendable to 3 years, parts only, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
