Ford Escape Used Engines

Escapes split cleanly into three eras: the 2001–2012 body-on-platform SUV with Duratec fours and the 3.0L V6, the 2013–2019 global C-platform car with EcoBoost turbos, and the 2020-up car. The engines do not cross those boundaries. Within the 2013–2019 range there is a further split that catches a lot of buyers — the 1.6L EcoBoost and the 2.0L EcoBoost are different engines with different blocks, not two tunes of one.

How to pick the right one

Confirm the generation, then the 8th VIN digit. The expensive mistake on this model is buying a 1.6L EcoBoost for a 1.5L car or the reverse — Ford replaced the 1.6L mid-generation precisely because of a defect, and the two have different blocks, different cooling circuits and different mounts. On hybrids, the Atkinson-cycle engine is a distinct part number and cannot be swapped with the conventional 2.5L. If the car is a 2020 or later 1.5L, note that it is a three-cylinder — nothing from the earlier four-cylinder range fits.

What usually fails on these engines

The 2013–2016 1.6L EcoBoost is the one with a named defect: coolant leaks past a casting flaw into number two cylinder, the engine overheats, and in a number of cases the result was an engine fire. Ford ran several recalls. We do not list 1.6L units without a documented cylinder head and block inspection. On the 2.5L Duratec the failures are age-related — timing chain and water pump. On the 2.0L EcoBoost, carbon on the intake valves and the occasional turbo.

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
