Ford Expedition Used Engines
Expedition engines are F-150 engines, which is the most useful fact when sourcing one - a correctly coded F-150 unit of the same year and valve count fits. The truck ran the 4.6 and 5.4 Triton V8s from 1997 to 2014 and moved to the 3.5 EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 for 2015. The split that catches people out is inside the Triton years: Ford changed the 5.4 from two valves per cylinder to three for 2004, and those are different engines with different heads, different cams and different coils.
Ford Expedition Used Engines — engine options by generation
| Years | Engine | Family / VIN code | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1997-2004 | 4.6L Triton V8 (2V) | VIN 6 | Two valves per cylinder - the base engine |
| 1997-2003 | 5.4L Triton V8 (2V) | VIN L | Two-valve 5.4 - different heads to the 3V |
| 2004-2014 | 5.4L Triton V8 (3V) | VIN 5 | Three-valve with VCT - the volume engine |
| 2005-2014 | 4.6L Triton V8 (3V) | VIN 8 | Three-valve 4.6, briefly offered |
| 2015-2017 | 3.5L EcoBoost V6 | VIN T | Twin turbo - replaced the V8 entirely |
| 2018-current | 3.5L EcoBoost V6 | VIN 8 | Second-generation EcoBoost, ten-speed |
How to pick the right one
Tell us the model year and, for a Triton, the valve count - two-valve or three-valve - because that is the line people get wrong and it is the difference between a bolt-in engine and a wasted freight charge. The 2004 change on the 5.4 brought variable cam timing, a different head and a different coil arrangement. The 4.6 and the 5.4 share the Modular family and the bellhousing but are different displacements. From 2015 the 3.5 EcoBoost is the only engine, and the 2015-2017 and 2018-onward versions differ in the fuel system and the front cover. Navigator engines of the same year are the same parts. Send the VIN and we read the eighth character.
What usually fails on these engines
Two things define the Triton 5.4 and both are worth knowing before you spend money. The three-valve engine has a cam phaser and timing chain tensioner that rattle on a cold start, and left alone the chain jumps - that noise is a warning, not a quirk. And the spark plugs on the three-valve are a two-piece design that can shear in the head on removal, which is a cheap job that becomes an expensive one, so if yours has never had plugs done, factor it in. On the two-valve engines, the known item is spark plug thread blowout from the aluminium head. On the 3.5 EcoBoost, the timing chain, the turbo coolant lines and carbon on the intake valves are the items. Every engine here is compression and leak-down tested.

Ford Expedition used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Ford Expedition use?
Across 1997 to today the Ford Expedition was built with 4.6L Triton V8 (2V), 5.4L Triton V8 (2V), 5.4L Triton V8 (3V), 4.6L Triton V8 (3V) and 3.5L EcoBoost V6. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Ford Expedition?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
