Ford F-150 Used Transmissions
F-150 transmissions come down to three generations of automatic: the AOD family through 2008, the 6R80 from 2009, and the 10R80 from 2017. Within the AOD family the names run AOD, AODE, 4R70W, 4R75W and 4R75E, which look like five parts and behave like one evolving design. The engine in front of it is what decides which you need, so give us the engine with the year.
Ford F-150 Used Transmissions — transmission options by generation
| Years | Transmission | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1990–1992 | AOD | 4-speed auto | Hydraulic, no electronic control |

| 1990–1997 | M5OD-R2 | 5-speed manual | Behind the 4.9 and 5.0 |
| 1998–2003 | 4R70W | 4-speed auto | The volume unit of this generation |
| 2004–2008 | 4R75W / 4R75E | 4-speed auto | Strengthened for the 5.4 3V |
| 2009–2010 | 6R80 | 6-speed auto | Introduced with the 5.4 and 4.6 3V |
| 2011–2016 | 6R80 | 6-speed auto | Behind the 3.7, 5.0, 3.5 EcoBoost and 6.2 |
| 2017–current | 10R80 | 10-speed auto | Behind the 2.7, 3.5 EcoBoost and 5.0 |
How to pick the right one
Give us the model year, the engine and the drivetrain together. Inside the AOD family the torque converter and the input shaft change with the engine, so a 4R70W from a 4.6L truck and a 4R75W from a 5.4L 3V are not substitutes even though they look identical from outside. On 2009-up trucks the 6R80 is common to the whole range but the valve body calibration is engine-specific, which matters if you are reusing your own control module. Four-wheel-drive trucks use a different tailhousing for the transfer case.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The 4R70W and 4R75W fail at the forward clutch and the intermediate band, and the usual story is a slipping second-to-third shift that gets worse until the truck will not pull. The 6R80 is a genuinely good unit; what we see on it is the lead frame and solenoid body rather than the gear train, and a harsh 1-2 shift is often a solenoid rather than a transmission. The 10R80 had shift-quality complaints in its first years that Ford addressed with recalibrations, so on a 2017 or 2018 truck the software level is worth asking about before you condemn the hardware.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Ford F-150 used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Ford F-150 use?
Across 1990 to today the Ford F-150 was built with AOD, AODE / 4R70W, M5OD-R2, 4R70W, 4R75W / 4R75E, 6R80 and 10R80. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Ford F-150?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Ford F-150?
Give us the model year, the engine and the drivetrain together. Inside the AOD family the torque converter and the input shaft change with the engine, so a 4R70W from a 4.6L truck and a 4R75W from a 5.4L 3V are not substitutes even though they look identical from outside.

What comes with a used Ford F-150 transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
