Ford F-250 Used Engines
F-250 buyers divide almost perfectly into two groups: people replacing a 5.4L Triton and people replacing a Power Stroke. Both have well-known failure modes and both have a generation you specifically want and a generation you specifically do not. The Super Duty line started in 1999, and anything before that is a different truck with a different engine range, so the first question is always whether you have a Super Duty.

How to pick the right one
Confirm Super Duty or pre-Super Duty, then read the 8th VIN digit. On the 5.4L, the 2V and 3V are different engines — different heads, different cam drive, different plugs — and 2003 is the changeover year, so a 2003 truck can be either. On the diesels, the generation is the whole story: 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L are four unrelated engines with four different failure profiles. If the truck is a 6.0L, also tell us whether the head studs and EGR cooler have been addressed, because that changes what we would recommend.
What usually fails on these engines
The 5.4L Triton is best known for its cam phasers and timing chain tensioners, and on 2V engines for spitting spark plugs out of the aluminium heads — the threads strip and the plug leaves under compression. On the diesel side, the 6.0L Power Stroke is the one to be careful with: EGR cooler failure pressurises the cooling system, head gaskets lift because the stock head bolts stretch, and the oil cooler clogs. The 7.3L and the 6.7L are both genuinely durable. Every diesel we list ships with a compression test and an oil analysis.

Ford F-250 used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Ford F-250 use?
Across 1990 to today the Ford F-250 was built with 4.9L I6 / 5.8L V8, 7.5L V8 / 7.3L IDI diesel, 7.3L Power Stroke, 5.4L Triton V8, 6.8L Triton V10, 6.0L Power Stroke, 6.4L Power Stroke, 6.2L Boss V8 and 6.7L Power Stroke. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Ford F-250?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my Ford F-250?
Confirm Super Duty or pre-Super Duty, then read the 8th VIN digit. On the 5.4L, the 2V and 3V are different engines — different heads, different cam drive, different plugs — and 2003 is the changeover year, so a 2003 truck can be either.
