Ford F-250 Used Transmissions
Super Duty transmissions are bought by two groups: people whose 5R110W or 6R140 has finally given up behind a Power Stroke, and people replacing an E4OD or 4R100 in an older truck. The dividing line is 1999, when the Super Duty line started. Before you order, settle three things: the model year, gasoline or diesel, and two-wheel or four-wheel drive. All three change the part.

How to pick the right one
Model year, fuel type and drivetrain, in that order. The gasoline and diesel versions of the same transmission are not the same part — the torque converter, the bellhousing bolt pattern and in some years the valve body calibration all differ, which is why a 5R110W out of a 6.0L truck will not simply go behind a 5.4L. On four-wheel-drive trucks the tailhousing and output shaft are different again. If the truck is a 2003 or a 2010, note that both are changeover years and can carry either of two units, so the VIN is worth checking rather than assuming.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The E4OD and the 4R100 both fail at the overdrive planetary and the torque converter, usually after years of towing on original fluid. The 5R110W is a strong unit, and when it does come in it is normally the solenoid body or the pressure switches rather than the gear train — worth knowing, because that is a far cheaper repair than a replacement. The 6R140 is the most durable automatic Ford has put behind a diesel. On any of these, if the truck overheated the fluid at any point the clutches will tell you, which is why we pressure test and inspect the fluid on every unit before listing it.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.
Replacing the engine too? See our F-250 used engines. Full terms are in the transmission warranty policy, and the complete catalogue is at used transmissions.
Ford F-250 used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Ford F-250 use?
Across 1990 to today the Ford F-250 was built with C6, E4OD, ZF S5-42 / S5-47, 4R100, ZF S6-650, 5R110W TorqShift, 6R140 TorqShift and 10R140 TorqShift. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Ford F-250?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Ford F-250?
Model year, fuel type and drivetrain, in that order. The gasoline and diesel versions of the same transmission are not the same part — the torque converter, the bellhousing bolt pattern and in some years the valve body calibration all differ, which is why a 5R110W out of a 6.0L truck will not simply go behind a 5.4L.

What comes with a used Ford F-250 transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
