Ford Focus Used Engines

Focus engines look simple from the outside — almost everything is a 2.0L four — and that is exactly the trap. Four unrelated 2.0L engines were fitted to US Focuses between 2000 and 2018: the pushrod-era SPI, the Zetec, the Duratec 20E and the direct-injected GDI of the third-generation car. They share a displacement and nothing else, and the 8th VIN digit is the only thing that separates them.

Ford Focus Used Engines — engine options by generation

2003–2007 2.3L I4 Duratec 23 — VIN Z PZEV in some states
2005–2007 2.0L I4 Duratec 20E — VIN N Replaced the Zetec

2013–2018 (ST) 2.0L turbo I4 EcoBoost — VIN 9 252 hp
2016–2018 (RS) 2.3L turbo I4 EcoBoost — VIN H 350 hp, head gasket issue on early cars
2012–2018 (Electric) n/a n/a Battery electric — no engine

How to pick the right one

Read the 8th VIN digit; on this car the displacement tells you almost nothing. The SPI and the Zetec were sold side by side in the same model years and are completely different engines. The 2012-up GDI is direct injected with its own high-pressure fuel pump and camshaft and will not run on earlier engine management. If the car is an ST or an RS, those are dedicated turbocharged parts with nothing shared with the base engine, and on early RS cars the head gasket was replaced under warranty on a documented build range.

What usually fails on these engines

What we mostly see on the Focus is secondary damage rather than design failure: head gaskets after an overheat on the Zetec and Duratec, and timing chain tensioner wear on the GDI. On the 2012–2016 cars the more common complaint is the dual-clutch transmission rather than the engine, so check that the car is worth an engine before you buy one. On the 2016–2018 RS, early engines suffered a head gasket failure from a mismatched cylinder head and Ford replaced them under warranty; we confirm which head is fitted before listing one.

Ford Focus used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Ford Focus use?

Across 2000 to 2018 the Ford Focus was built with 2.0L SOHC I4, 2.0L DOHC I4, 2.3L I4, 2.0L I4, 1.0L turbo I3, 2.0L turbo I4, 2.3L turbo I4 and n/a. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Ford Focus?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Ford Focus?

Read the 8th VIN digit; on this car the displacement tells you almost nothing. The SPI and the Zetec were sold side by side in the same model years and are completely different engines.

What usually fails on these engines?

What we mostly see on the Focus is secondary damage rather than design failure: head gaskets after an overheat on the Zetec and Duratec, and timing chain tensioner wear on the GDI. On the 2012–2016 cars the more common complaint is the dual-clutch transmission rather than the engine, so check that the car is worth an engine before you buy one.

What comes with a used Ford Focus engine?

Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
