Ford Focus Used Transmissions
There is one thing to know before you buy a Focus transmission, and it governs everything else: the 2012–2018 cars use the DPS6 PowerShift, a dry dual-clutch automatic that was the subject of a class action settlement and an extended warranty in the United States. If your car is one of those, read the failure notes below before you spend anything, because a replacement unit of the same design may not be the right answer.
Ford Focus Used Transmissions — transmission options by generation
| Years | Transmission | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000–2007 | 4F27E | 4-speed auto | Conventional torque converter automatic |
| 2000–2011 | MTX-75 | 5-speed manual | Durable — often worth a rebuild |
| 2008–2011 | 4F27E | 4-speed auto | Carried over |
| 2012–2018 | DPS6 PowerShift | 6-speed dual clutch | Dry clutch — class action settled, see below |
| 2012–2018 | 5 and 6-speed manual | manual | The reliable choice in this generation |
| 2013–2018 (ST) | 6-speed manual | dedicated | No automatic was offered |
| 2016–2018 (RS) | 6-speed manual | dedicated | AWD — standalone part |
How to pick the right one
Model year decides the family, and 2012 is the line. Before 2012 you need a 4F27E or a manual; from 2012 an automatic car is a DPS6 and there is no conventional alternative that fits. If the car is an ST or an RS, those manuals are dedicated parts with their own gear sets and, on the RS, an all-wheel-drive output. Tell us the engine as well — the 1.0 EcoBoost, 2.0 GDI and turbo cars use different clutch and input arrangements.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The DPS6 PowerShift is the reason most Focus transmissions get replaced. A dry dual-clutch design in a car driven mostly in traffic produced clutch shudder, slipping, harsh engagement and TCM failures, and Ford extended the warranty and settled a US class action over it. Two things follow. First, check whether your car is still covered before you buy — it may cost you nothing. Second, if you do replace it, the clutch assembly and the TCM are the parts that fail, not usually the gearbox, and we list the TCM condition on every DPS6 unit. The 4F27E and the manuals are both unremarkable by comparison.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Ford Focus used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Ford Focus use?
Across 2000 to 2018 the Ford Focus was built with 4F27E, MTX-75, DPS6 PowerShift, 5 and 6-speed manual and 6-speed manual. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Ford Focus?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Ford Focus?
Model year decides the family, and 2012 is the line. Before 2012 you need a 4F27E or a manual; from 2012 an automatic car is a DPS6 and there is no conventional alternative that fits.

What comes with a used Ford Focus transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
