Ford Fusion Used Engines

Fusion engines split at 2013, when the car moved to the global CD4 platform and the naturally aspirated range was largely replaced by EcoBoost turbos. The first-generation car is simple — a Duratec four or a Duratec V6. The second generation is where the care is needed, because it offered three different EcoBoost displacements, a port-injected 2.5L and a hybrid, often in the same model year.

How to pick the right one

Generation first, then the 8th VIN digit. The expensive mistake on the second-generation car is the 1.6L against the 1.5L EcoBoost — Ford replaced the 1.6L mid-generation because of a defect and the two have different blocks and cooling circuits. On hybrids, the Atkinson-cycle engine is a distinct part with a different compression ratio and no conventional accessory drive, and the HEV and Energi versions differ again. If the car is a 2017–2019 Sport, the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 is a dedicated part shared with the F-150, not with any other Fusion.

What usually fails on these engines

The 2013–2016 1.6L EcoBoost carries a named defect: coolant leaks past a casting flaw into number two cylinder, the engine overheats, and Ford ran several recalls after a number of fires. We do not list 1.6L units without a documented head and block inspection. The 2.0L EcoBoost suffers carbon buildup on the intake valves, which is a service item rather than a failure, and occasionally a turbo. On the 2.5L Duratec the failures are age-related — timing chain and water pump. Everything here is compression and leak-down tested.

Ford Fusion used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Ford Fusion use?

Across 2006 to 2020 the Ford Fusion was built with 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6, 2.5L I4, 3.5L V6, 2.5L Atkinson I4, 1.6L EcoBoost, 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost and 2.0L Atkinson I4. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Ford Fusion?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Ford Fusion?
