Ford Mustang Used Transmissions
Mustang transmissions are the one group where buyers are as often upgrading as repairing, so what interchanges is the real question. Automatics run AOD, AODE, 4R70W, 5R55S, 6R80 and 10R80 across the generations. Manuals run T-5, T-45, TR-3650, MT82 and the Tremec TR-6060 and TR-3160 in the performance cars, and those are separate parts with their own gear sets, bellhousings and shifter locations.

How to pick the right one
Name the generation and the engine, and say automatic or manual before anything else. The automatics do not cross generations: a 5R55S and a 6R80 share nothing, and the 6R80 to 10R80 change in 2018 is equally absolute. On manuals, the bellhousing pattern changed with the engine family, so a T-5 from a 5.0 Windsor car does not bolt to a Modular V8 without an adapter. If the car is a GT350, GT500 or Terminator, the Tremec unit is a dedicated part and we list those separately.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The 5R55S is the automatic that most often needs replacing — servo bore wear in the aluminium case and a failing solenoid pack, which shows as a lost gear or a limp-mode default. The 6R80 is robust and usually arrives with a lead frame or solenoid fault rather than a damaged gear train. The MT82 manual is the one with a reputation: notchy and sometimes baulky shifts from new, several Ford TSBs and a revised D4 version from 2018. If yours is an MT82 that will not take third, it may be the shifter and the fluid rather than the gearbox, and that is worth checking first.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Ford Mustang used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Ford Mustang use?
Across 1990 to 2023 the Ford Mustang was built with AOD, T-5, AODE / 4R70W, T-45, TR-3650, T-56, 5R55S, TR-6060 and 6R80. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Ford Mustang?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Ford Mustang?
Name the generation and the engine, and say automatic or manual before anything else. The automatics do not cross generations: a 5R55S and a 6R80 share nothing, and the 6R80 to 10R80 change in 2018 is equally absolute.

What comes with a used Ford Mustang transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
