Ford Taurus Used Engines

The Taurus ran for twenty-nine years across six generations, and the engine you need depends on which of two 3.0L V6s your car has — a question that trips up more Taurus buyers than anything else. The pushrod Vulcan and the dual-overhead-cam Duratec were both sold as "3.0L V6" in the same model years, and they share nothing: different block, different heads, different timing, different mounts.

How to pick the right one

The 3.0L question comes first: Vulcan or Duratec. Read the 8th VIN digit — a U is a Vulcan and an S is a Duratec, and they are not interchangeable in either direction. After 2008 the range simplifies to the 3.5L, but then you must separate the naturally aspirated Duratec 35 from the 3.5L EcoBoost of the SHO, which share a displacement and nothing else. If the car is a 1996–1999 SHO, the 3.4L Yamaha V8 is a specialist part and we will tell you the cam sprocket history before you buy.

What usually fails on these engines

The Vulcan is the Taurus engine with the best reputation — unremarkable but long-lived, and the pragmatic buy if your car can take one. The 3.8L Essex is the opposite: head gasket failure was common enough that Ford extended coverage on it. The 1996–1999 SHO V8 has a specific and expensive failure — the camshaft sprockets are pressed rather than keyed onto the cams and they can slip, which drops valves into pistons. On the 3.5L EcoBoost, the timing chain and the turbo coolant lines are the known wear items.
