GMC Sierra Used Engines
The Sierra shares its entire powertrain catalogue with the Silverado, which is good news when you are sourcing: the pool of usable donor engines is far larger than the badge suggests, and a correctly coded Silverado unit drops straight into a Sierra of the same generation. What does not carry over is trim-driven equipment — Denali trucks took the high-output options, and the 6.2L was never fitted across the whole range.
GMC Sierra Used Engines — engine options by generation
| Years | Engine | Family / VIN code | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1999–2006 (GMT800) | 4.3L V6 | LU3 — VIN W / X | Vortec 4300 |
| 1999–2006 (GMT800) | 4.8L / 5.3L V8 | LR4, LM7, L59, L33 | Three distinct 5.3L variants — VIN T, Z and B |
| 1999–2006 (GMT800) | 6.0L V8 | LQ4 / LQ9 — VIN U / N | LQ9 in Denali and 2500/3500 |

| 2007–2016 | 6.6L Duramax | LMM / LML | LMM added the DPF, LML the CP4.2 pump |
| 2014–2018 (K2XX) | 4.3 / 5.3 / 6.2L EcoTec3 | LV3 / L83 / L86 | Direct injection with AFM |
| 2019–current (T1XX) | 2.7L turbo, 5.3, 6.2, 3.0L diesel | L3B, L84, L87, LM2 | Dynamic Fuel Management |
How to pick the right one
Start from the 8th VIN digit, then confirm the half-ton versus three-quarter-ton split, because the feed treats 1500, 2500 and 3500 as separate fitments even where the engine itself is shared. If the truck is a 2007–2013 Denali there is a reasonable chance it carries the 6.2L L92 rather than a 6.0L, and those two are not interchangeable without the matching accessory drive. For anything 2014 and later, note that the EcoTec3 engines are direct injected — the high-pressure fuel pump and the camshaft that drives it come as part of the assembly and should not be swapped in from an earlier port-injected unit.
What usually fails on these engines
Sierras follow the Silverado failure pattern exactly: collapsed AFM lifters and high oil consumption on the 2007–2014 5.3L, and on 6.6L Duramax trucks either LB7 injectors or an LML CP4 pump taking the fuel system with it. Where we list a Duramax, the injectors and pump condition are noted on the unit rather than left for you to discover.

GMC Sierra used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the GMC Sierra use?
Across 1999 to today the GMC Sierra was built with 4.3L V6, 4.8L / 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 8.1L V8, 6.6L Duramax, 4.8 / 5.3 / 6.0L, 6.2L V8, 4.3 / 5.3 / 6.2L EcoTec3 and 2.7L turbo, 5.3, 6.2, 3.0L diesel. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my GMC Sierra?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my GMC Sierra?
Start from the 8th VIN digit, then confirm the half-ton versus three-quarter-ton split, because the feed treats 1500, 2500 and 3500 as separate fitments even where the engine itself is shared.
