GMC Terrain Used Engines
Terrain engines are Equinox engines - the two vehicles are the same thing under different badges and a correctly coded Equinox unit of the same year fits, which doubles the pool. There are two generations. The 2010-2017 Terrain runs the 2.4 Ecotec four as the volume engine, with the 3.0 LF1 V6 for two years and the 3.6 LFX from 2013. From 2018 the range is turbocharged only: the 1.5 LYX and the 2.0 LTG, plus a 1.6 diesel offered briefly.

How to pick the right one
Generation first - 2010-2017 or 2018-onward - because they are different vehicles and nothing crosses the line. On the earlier car, tell us 2.4 four or V6, and for a V6 whether it is the 3.0 LF1 of 2010-2011 or the 3.6 LFX from 2013; those are different engines. On the 2018-onward car the 1.5 and 2.0 turbos are separate blocks with separate turbochargers and separate management, so the displacement matters. Equinox engines of the same year are the same parts, so check that page as well if your year looks thin here. Send us the VIN and we read the eighth character against the build.
What usually fails on these engines
The 2.4 Ecotec is the engine with the record. It consumes oil through worn piston rings and a failing crankcase ventilation system, and once the oil level drops the timing chain follows - GM faced a class action over oil consumption on this engine family, so if yours is burning oil that is a known fault rather than bad luck. The balance chain rattles on a cold start as it wears. On the 3.6 LFX, watch the timing chain and the variable valve timing solenoids. On the 1.5 LYX turbo, the known items are the turbo coolant line and carbon on the intake valves, which is inherent to a direct-injection engine. Every engine here is compression and leak-down tested with the sheet in the box.

GMC Terrain used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the GMC Terrain use?
Across 2010 to today the GMC Terrain was built with 2.4L Ecotec LAF / LEA, 3.0L LF1 V6, 3.6L LFX V6, 1.5L LYX turbo, 2.0L LTG turbo and 1.6L LH7 diesel. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my GMC Terrain?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
