GMC Yukon Used Engines

Yukon engines come from the same GM pool as the Tahoe and Suburban, and the Yukon adds the Denali variable: Denali trucks took the high-output options where the base Yukon did not, which is why a 2008 Yukon can have a 5.3L and a 2008 Yukon Denali the 6.2L L92. Those two are not interchangeable without the matching accessory drive, so the trim matters as much as the model year.

How to pick the right one

Give us the trim and the 8th VIN digit together. Base Yukon, Yukon XL and Yukon Denali took different engines in the same model year, and on the XL there is a further split between the 1500 and the 2500. On 2007–2014 trucks, Active Fuel Management is the critical compatibility question — the lifters, camshaft and calibration all differ. If the truck is a 2008–2013 Two-Mode Hybrid, the 6.0L LZ1 is a dedicated part and a conventional 6.0L will not replace it.

What usually fails on these engines

The 2007–2014 5.3L dominates the failures: collapsed AFM lifters, camshaft damage, and high oil consumption from the AFM oil deflector and the ring design. The 6.2L L92 of the Denali trucks is the better engine but shares the AFM lifter issue in its L9H form. On the older L31 Vortec, what fails is the intake manifold gasket and the plastic coolant fittings rather than the engine itself. We compression and leak-down test every unit and note the AFM configuration on the product page.

GMC Yukon used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the GMC Yukon use?

Across 1992 to today the GMC Yukon was built with 5.7L V8, 6.5L diesel, 4.8L / 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8 hybrid, 6.2L V8, 5.3L EcoTec3 and 6.2L EcoTec3. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my GMC Yukon?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my GMC Yukon?

Give us the trim and the 8th VIN digit together. Base Yukon, Yukon XL and Yukon Denali took different engines in the same model year, and on the XL there is a further split between the 1500 and the 2500.

What usually fails on these engines?

The 2007–2014 5.3L dominates the failures: collapsed AFM lifters, camshaft damage, and high oil consumption from the AFM oil deflector and the ring design. The 6.2L L92 of the Denali trucks is the better engine but shares the AFM lifter issue in its L9H form.

What comes with a used GMC Yukon engine?

Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
