Honda Accord Used Engines

Accord engines are among the most reliable units we handle, which means most of the ones we sell are replacing an engine that was lost to something other than wear — a timing belt on the V6, an overheat, a dropped valve seat. Because Honda kept the same displacement badge across very different blocks (the 2.4L covers both the K24A of the 2003–2007 car and the Earth Dreams K24W of the 2013–2017 car), the generation matters far more than the litre figure.

2013–2017 (CR) 2.4L I4 K24W1 (Earth Dreams) Direct injection — not interchangeable with K24A
2013–2017 (CR) 3.5L V6 J35Y1 VCM, direct injection
2018–2022 (CV) 1.5L turbo / 2.0L turbo L15BE / K20C4 L15 shares its family with the Civic 1.5T

How to pick the right one

Honda puts the engine family in the VIN, so match the 6th VIN digit on pre-2003 cars and the 8th on later ones rather than working from displacement. The two places people get caught are the 2.4L and the V6. On the 2.4L, a K24A from an 03–07 car will not run in a 13–17 car — different injection system, different head, different accessory drive. On the V6, confirm whether the donor had Variable Cylinder Management, because a VCM engine in a non-VCM car (or the reverse) will throw cylinder deactivation faults the ECU cannot clear.

What usually fails on these engines

Three patterns account for most Accord engine replacements. On the 1998–2002 F23 and the 2003–2007 J30, a snapped timing belt is the usual cause of death, which is why we fit a new belt and water pump to every belt-driven unit before it ships. On the 2008–2012 J35 with VCM, the rear bank rings coke up and oil consumption climbs until a cylinder fouls. And on the 2008–2012 K24Z, excessive oil consumption from ring wear is common enough that we leak-down test every one.

Honda Accord used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Honda Accord use?

Across 1990 to 2022 the Honda Accord was built with 2.2L I4, 2.7L V6, 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6, 2.4L I4, 3.5L V6 and 1.5L turbo / 2.0L turbo. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Honda Accord?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Honda Accord?

Honda puts the engine family in the VIN, so match the 6th VIN digit on pre-2003 cars and the 8th on later ones rather than working from displacement. The two places people get caught are the 2.4L and the V6.

What comes with a used Honda Accord engine?

Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
