Honda Civic Used Engines
The Civic has the widest engine spread of anything in our catalogue: eight generations, four distinct engine families, and within each family a split between the base unit and the VTEC or Si version that shares nothing but the badge. The practical consequence is that a Civic engine ordered on year and displacement alone has a genuinely poor chance of being the right part. Everything below is filed against the VIN character.
Honda Civic Used Engines — engine options by generation
| Years | Engine | Family / VIN code | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1992–1995 (EG) | 1.5L / 1.6L I4 | D15B7, D15B8, D16Z6 | D16Z6 is the VTEC Si unit |
| 1996–2000 (EK) | 1.6L I4 | D16Y7 / D16Y8 / B16A2 | Y8 is VTEC EX, B16A2 is the Si — different family entirely |
| 2001–2005 (ES/EM2) | 1.7L I4 | D17A1 / D17A2 / D17A6 | A2 is VTEC, A6 is the Si-spec |
| 2001–2005 (EP3) | 2.0L I4 | K20A3 | Si hatchback only |
| 2006–2011 (FA/FG) | 1.8L I4 | R18A1 | The high-volume unit — i-VTEC, timing chain |
| 2006–2011 (FG2) | 2.0L I4 | K20Z3 | Si only, 197 hp |
| 2006–2011 (FD3) | 1.3L hybrid | LDA2 | IMA hybrid — not interchangeable with R18 |
| 2012–2015 (FB) | 1.8L I4 | R18Z1 | Revised R18, port injected |
| 2012–2015 (FB6) | 2.4L I4 | K24Z7 | Si only |
| 2016–2021 (FC/FK) | 2.0L I4 | K20C2 | Naturally aspirated direct injection |
| 2016–2021 (FC/FK) | 1.5L turbo | L15B7 / L15BA | The volume engine on EX and up |
| 2017–2021 (FK8) | 2.0L turbo | K20C1 | Type R — nothing shared with K20C2 |
How to pick the right one
Work from the VIN character, not the trim badge on the boot. The classic Civic mis-order is a 1996–2000 car: a D16Y8 and a B16A2 are both "1.6L VTEC" in a parts listing and neither will bolt to the other car's mounts and harness. On 2016 and later cars the split that matters is the 2.0L K20C2 against the 1.5L turbo L15B7 — and inside the 1.5L there is a further split between the Civic unit and the Type R K20C1, which shares a displacement with nothing it is near. If your car is a hybrid, the LDA2 is its own part and cannot be replaced with an R18.
What usually fails on these engines
What brings Civics to us is mostly age rather than a design defect: head gasket failure after an overheat on the D-series, timing chain tensioner wear on the R18, and on the 1.5L turbo the oil-dilution issue that showed up in cold climates — fuel washing past the rings into the sump, thinning the oil and accelerating bearing wear. We check oil condition and do a leak-down on every 1.5T unit before listing it, and we note the result on the product page.
What ships with every unit
- Compression and leak-down tested before it is listed, with the test sheet in the box.
- VIN matched fitment — send us your VIN and we confirm the engine code against your vehicle before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every engine, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, shipped on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Honda Civic used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Honda Civic use?
Across 1992 to 2021 the Honda Civic was built with 1.5L / 1.6L I4, 1.6L I4, 1.7L I4, 2.0L I4, 1.8L I4, 1.3L hybrid, 2.4L I4, 1.5L turbo and 2.0L turbo. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Honda Civic?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my Honda Civic?
