Hyundai Sonata Used Transmissions
Sonata transmissions move through four generations of Hyundai automatic in twenty years — four-speed, five-speed, six-speed and eight-speed — and the engine decides which. The ones needing most care are the 2.0 turbo cars, which take a different six or eight-speed from the naturally aspirated 2.4, and the Eco, which took a seven-speed dual clutch that is a dedicated part.

How to pick the right one
Generation and engine, and say whether the car is a turbo, an Eco or a hybrid. The A6MF1 and A6MF2 share a family name and are not the same unit — the 2 is built for the turbo's torque. The hybrid transmission has no torque converter and cannot substitute for a conventional automatic in either direction. The D7UF1 dual clutch in the Eco needs its own control module. If you are buying a 2.4 car, check the engine recall status at the same time: a large number of Theta II engines were covered by an extended warranty and the transmission may not be your real problem.
What usually fails on these transmissions
On the four and five-speed automatics the failures are the valve body and the shift solenoids, which give harsh or missed shifts rather than a dead transmission — diagnose before you replace. The A6MF family is reasonable and what we see is solenoid and valve body wear where the fluid has been left. The D7UF1 dual clutch has a pattern: clutch actuator and control module failure, a shudder from a stop and then a refusal to engage, with software updates issued. The A8LF1 and A8MF1 are both recent enough that most come in as collision salvage rather than failures.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Hyundai Sonata used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Hyundai Sonata use?
Across 1999 to today the Hyundai Sonata was built with F4A42, 5-speed manual, A5GF1, A5HF1, A6MF1, A6MF2, A6MF2H, A6MF1 / A6MF2 and D7UF1. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Hyundai Sonata?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Hyundai Sonata?
Generation and engine, and say whether the car is a turbo, an Eco or a hybrid. The A6MF1 and A6MF2 share a family name and are not the same unit — the 2 is built for the turbo's torque.

What comes with a used Hyundai Sonata transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
