The 2007–2017 MK car shared its platform with the Dodge Caliber and used the Global Engine Alliance "World Gas" fours; the 2017-up MP car is built on the Fiat small-wide platform and uses the Tigershark 2.4L with MultiAir. How to pick the right one
Read the VIN to establish MK or MP before anything else, especially on a 2017 car where both were sold. Inside the MK range, the 2.0L and the 2.4L are the same family but not interchangeable, and the 2011-up ED6 added dual variable valve timing with a different head. The Tigershark of the MP car shares the ED6 designation in some references but is a different engine with MultiAir hydraulic valve actuation on the intake side, and it will not run on MK engine management.
What usually fails on these engines
The 2017-up Tigershark 2.4L is the one with a documented pattern: oil consumption severe enough that Chrysler issued technical service bulletins and extended coverage on some build ranges, caused by piston ring and cylinder wall wear. The symptom is a low-oil light between services and, eventually, a misfire. On the World Gas engines of the MK car, the failures are the timing chain tensioner and the cylinder head on engines that have overheated.
