Jeep Grand Cherokee Used Engines
Grand Cherokee engines cover four platform generations and three different corporate parents, which is why the catalogue looks so scattered. The useful shorthand: ZJ and WJ cars take the AMC 4.0L inline six or a Magnum/PowerTech V8, WK cars take the 3.7L, 4.7L or HEMI, and WK2 cars from 2011 take the Pentastar 3.6L or the HEMI. Nothing crosses from WJ to WK, and nothing crosses from WK to WK2.

How to pick the right one
Generation first, then the 8th VIN digit. Two splits do most of the damage on this model. The 4.7L PowerTech came in a standard and a High Output version with different heads and camshafts — a 2002-up HO will not interchange with the earlier engine. And on the HEMI, confirm whether the donor had the Multi-Displacement System: an MDS engine run on a non-MDS calibration will misfire on the deactivating cylinders. If yours is a 3.0L CRD, it is a Mercedes OM642 and we file it under that family rather than under Jeep.
What usually fails on these engines
The 4.7L PowerTech is the Grand Cherokee engine that most often needs replacing — it runs hot, the heads crack between the valve seats, and a long service life depends entirely on the cooling system having been maintained. On the 5.7L HEMI the pattern is MDS lifter failure and the resulting camshaft damage, which sounds exactly like the GM AFM problem and has the same outcome. The 3.6L Pentastar had a left-bank cylinder head defect on 2011–2013 engines that Chrysler revised; we check the head casting number on every early Pentastar.

Jeep Grand Cherokee used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Jeep Grand Cherokee use?
Across 1993 to 2021 the Jeep Grand Cherokee was built with 4.0L I6, 5.2L / 5.9L V8, 4.7L V8, 3.7L V6, 5.7L HEMI, 6.1L HEMI, 3.0L CRD, 3.6L V6 and 3.0L EcoDiesel. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
