The Patriot ran from 2007 to 2017 with just two engines, both from the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance family that Chrysler built with Mitsubishi and Hyundai - usually called the World Engine. The 2.0 litre ECN was the base engine on front-drive cars and the 2.4 litre ED3, later ED6, was the volume engine and the only one offered with four-wheel drive. Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber engines of the same year are the same parts, which triples the pool you can draw from.

How to pick the right one
Tell us the displacement and the model year. The 2.0 and the 2.4 share the family and the bellhousing but have different bores, different cranks and different management, so they are not interchangeable. Within the 2.4, the ED3 of 2007-2010 and the ED6 from 2011 differ in the valve timing hardware on the exhaust cam, so match the year. If your Patriot has Freedom Drive four-wheel drive it is a 2.4 and the sump and the accessory drive differ from a front-drive car. What usually fails on these engines
The World Engine is not a refined engine and it is noisy by design, so a rattly Patriot is not necessarily a broken one. What does fail is the timing chain tensioner and guides, which is the commonest reason an engine comes out, and the cylinder head on engines that have been run low on oil. Oil consumption on higher-mileage units is normal rather than exceptional. Before you replace the engine, two things worth ruling out: a Patriot that hesitates or shudders under acceleration usually has a failing Jatco CVT2 continuously variable transmission rather than an engine fault, and that transmission needs its oil cooler working - a replacement fitted without one will fail the same way.
