Jeep Wrangler Used Transmissions
Wrangler transmissions are governed entirely by platform generation — YJ, TJ, JK or JL — and nothing crosses between them. A higher share of these are manuals than on anything else we stock, and the manual and automatic sides of each generation are completely separate parts. Transfer case compatibility matters as much as the transmission itself, so tell us which one the vehicle has.

How to pick the right one
Platform generation first, then automatic or manual, then the engine. The 2011-to-2012 change inside the JK is a real one: a 42RLE behind the 3.8 and a NAG1 behind the 3.6 are not interchangeable, and nor are the engines. Tell us the transfer case — Command-Trac and Rock-Trac use different adapters — and on a JL say whether the vehicle has the 3.6 or the 2.0 turbo, because the eight-speed calibration differs. On a manual Wrangler, a synchro and a bearing is often all it needs.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The 42RLE is the Wrangler automatic most often replaced, and as with every Chrysler RE unit the first thing to check is the governor pressure solenoid and transducer — a Jeep stuck in limp mode holding second gear is usually those two parts, not a failed transmission. Where it has genuinely gone it is the overdrive clutch. The NAG1 fails at the conductor plate and the valve body, and the 13-pin case connector leaks fluid into the harness, which produces faults that look internal. The NSG370 manual wears its synchros, particularly second, before anything else.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.
Replacing the engine too? See our Wrangler used engines. Full terms are in the transmission warranty policy, and the complete catalogue is at used transmissions.
Jeep Wrangler used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Jeep Wrangler use?
Across 1991 to today the Jeep Wrangler was built with 30RH / 32RH, AX-5 / AX-15, AX-5 / AX-15 / NV3550, 42RLE, NSG370, W5A580 (NAG1) and 850RE / 8HP. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Jeep Wrangler?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Jeep Wrangler?
Platform generation first, then automatic or manual, then the engine. The 2011-to-2012 change inside the JK is a real one: a 42RLE behind the 3.8 and a NAG1 behind the 3.6 are not interchangeable, and nor are the engines.

What comes with a used Jeep Wrangler transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
