Nissan Altima Used Transmissions

Altima transmissions divide at 2007. Before that they are conventional four and five-speed automatics or a manual; from 2007 every automatic is a continuously variable transmission. If your car is 2007 or later, the CVT is the whole subject, and it is worth checking your coverage before you buy because Nissan extended the warranty on a number of build ranges to ten years or 120,000 miles.

How to pick the right one

Model year and engine. The 2006-to-2007 change is the hard line: a conventional automatic will not go into a CVT car or the reverse. Inside the CVT years, the four-cylinder and V6 units are different — the V6 CVT is built for more torque — and the 2012-to-2013 revision changed the cooling arrangement. On pre-2007 cars, the RE4F04B behind the 2.5 and the RE5F22A behind the 3.5 are separate parts. Check your VIN against Nissan's extended CVT coverage before spending anything.

What usually fails on these transmissions

The CVT is what brings these cars in and the sequence is consistent: shudder from a stop, then a flare or lag, then a whine, then limp mode. Heat and belt and pulley wear are the causes. If you fit a replacement, service or replace the cooler circuit at the same time and keep to a strict fluid interval with genuine NS-2 or NS-3 fluid. On the older RE4F04 units the common item is the valve body and solenoids rather than the gear train. We run every CVT before listing it and report the fluid condition.

What ships with every unit

  • Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
  • Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
  • Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
  • Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Replacing the engine too? Note that the QR25DE has its own pre-cat failure that must be fixed at the same time — see our Altima used engines. Full terms are in the transmission warranty policy, and the complete catalogue is at used transmissions.

Nissan Altima used transmissions - frequently asked questions

Which transmissions did the Nissan Altima use?

Across 1993 to today the Nissan Altima was built with RE4F04A, 5-speed manual, RE4F04B, RE5F22A, 6-speed manual, RE0F10A (JF011E), CVT, V6-specific, JF016E / RE0F10E and Xtronic CVT. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.

How do I identify the right transmission for my Nissan Altima?

Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.

Will a transmission from a different year fit my Nissan Altima?

Model year and engine. The 2006-to-2007 change is the hard line: a conventional automatic will not go into a CVT car or the reverse.

What comes with a used Nissan Altima transmission?

Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
