Nissan Sentra Used Engines

Sentra engines are cheap, plentiful and easy to get wrong, because Nissan changed the base engine family four times in twenty-five years while keeping the displacement badges similar. The other thing to settle is whether your car is an SE-R: those took a larger engine from a different family in almost every generation, and nothing about the base car applies to them.

How to pick the right one

Model year and trim together. The base engine changed family in 2000, 2007, 2013 and 2020, and none of those changes was a revision — each was a different engine. GA16DE, QG18DE, MR20DE, MRA8DE and PR20DD share nothing but a bolt pattern in some cases. If the car is an SE-R or Spec V, you need the larger engine for that generation: an SR20DE on the early cars, a QR25DE on the 2002–2012 cars. On a Spec V, read the QR25DE notes below before you buy.

What usually fails on these engines

On the base engines the failures are age-related: timing chain guides on the GA16DE and QG18DE, and oil consumption on high-mileage MR20DE and MRA8DE units. The Spec V QR25DE is the one with a specific and preventable failure — the pre-catalytic converter in the exhaust manifold breaks down, the ceramic is drawn back into a cylinder past a leaking exhaust valve guide, and the abrasive dust scores the bores. If you are replacing one, replace the manifold and pre-cat at the same time. We bore-scope every QR25DE.

Nissan Sentra used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Nissan Sentra use?

Across 1991 to today the Nissan Sentra was built with 1.6L I4, 2.0L I4, 1.8L I4, 2.5L I4 and 1.6L turbo. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Nissan Sentra?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
