Subaru Legacy Used Engines

Legacy engines come out of the same boxer pool as the Outback, and the head gasket story is identical. What is different about the Legacy is the turbocharged GT: between 2005 and 2009 Subaru sold a 2.5L EJ255 Legacy GT that is mechanically closer to a WRX than to the car it shares a badge with, and those engines need to be bought and inspected differently. This page covers Legacy-specific listings; Outback-badged units are filed separately.

Subaru Legacy Used Engines — engine options by generation

Years Engine Family / VIN code Notes
1990–1994 (BC/BJ) 2.2L H4 EJ22 The famously durable one — non-interference
1991–1994 (BC) 2.0L turbo H4 EJ20G Sport Sedan — rare in the US
1995–1999 (BD/BG) 2.2L / 2.5L H4 EJ22 / EJ25D EJ25D is DOHC — head gasket prone
2000–2004 (BE/BH) 2.5L H4 EJ251 / EJ253 SOHC, multi-layer gasket late in the run
2000–2004 (BE) 3.0L H6 EZ30D Legacy GT 3.0 and L.L. Bean
2005–2009 (BL/BP) 2.5L H4 EJ253 The volume engine
2005–2009 (BL) 2.5L turbo H4 EJ255 Legacy GT — ringland failure is the risk
2008–2009 (BL) 3.0L H6 EZ30D Final EZ30 year
2010–2012 (BM) 2.5L H4 / 2.5L turbo EJ253 / EJ255 Last turbocharged Legacy
2010–2014 (BM) 3.6L H6 EZ36D 256 hp
2013–2019 (BN) 2.5L H4 FB25 Chain driven — new family, not an EJ substitute
2020–current (BW) 2.5L H4 / 2.4L turbo FB25 DI / FA24F Direct injection

How to pick the right one

Establish EJ against FB first, and after that whether the car is naturally aspirated or a GT. The EJ253 and EJ255 share a displacement and almost nothing else: the turbocharged engine has different pistons, a different oiling arrangement and a different intake, and it cannot be dropped into a naturally aspirated car. On H6 cars the EZ30 and EZ36 are separate parts. If you are buying an early car, the 2.2L EJ22 is the engine with the reputation for lasting, and if your Legacy can take one it is usually the better buy.

What usually fails on these engines

Head gasket failure dominates, as it does across the boxer range, and the pattern is the same: internal failure on the 1996–1999 DOHC EJ25D, external seepage at the bank on the later SOHC engines. On the EJ255 turbo, the problem is different and more sudden — ringland failure, usually on cylinder four, from detonation or a lean condition under boost. That one ends with a compression loss and a puff of smoke. We combustion-leak test every EJ and bore-scope every turbocharged unit before listing it.

What ships with every unit

  • Compression and leak-down tested before it is listed, with the test sheet in the box.
  • VIN matched fitment — send us your VIN and we confirm the engine code against your vehicle before the order ships.
  • Written warranty on every engine, with labour coverage available.
  • Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, shipped on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Subaru Legacy used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Subaru Legacy use?

Across 1990 to today the Subaru Legacy was built with 2.2L H4, 2.0L turbo H4, 2.2L / 2.5L H4, 2.5L H4, 3.0L H6, 2.5L turbo H4, 2.5L H4 / 2.5L turbo, 3.6L H6 and 2.5L H4 / 2.4L turbo. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Subaru Legacy?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Subaru Legacy?

What comes with a used Subaru Legacy engine?

Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
