VW Jetta Used Engines
Jetta engines are the one group where the engine code is genuinely non-negotiable. Volkswagen used three-letter codes rather than displacement, and within a single displacement and model year there are often four or five codes with different heads, injection systems and mounts. If you order a Jetta engine on "2.0L, 2004" you have a poor chance of getting a part that fits. The code is stamped on the block and appears in the service book.

How to pick the right one
Send us the three-letter engine code. Everything else on this car is guesswork — a 2004 Jetta 2.0L could be an AEG, AVH, AZG or BEV, and those differ in the head, the intake and the engine management. On TDI cars the code also tells us the injection system: an ALH is distributor-pump, a BEW is Pumpe Düse and a CJAA is common rail, and none of the three will run on another's harness or ECU. On 1.8T and 2.0T cars, the EA113 and EA888 families share nothing beyond the displacement figure.
What usually fails on these engines
The 1.8T EA113 of the Mk4 is the Jetta engine most often lost to one cause: oil sludge. The sump breather and the small oil capacity meant that a car on long service intervals coked its oil pickup and starved the bearings. Buy one with a documented service history or buy a later engine. On the 2.0T FSI BPY, the camshaft follower for the high-pressure fuel pump wears through and takes the cam lobe with it. On EA888 Gen 2 and early Gen 3, the timing chain tensioner and oil consumption are the known issues. We check the oil pickup and the chain tensioner on every turbocharged VW unit.

VW Jetta used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the VW Jetta use?
Across 1993 to today the VW Jetta was built with 2.0L I4, 1.9L TDI, 2.8L VR6, 1.8L turbo, 2.5L I5, 2.0L turbo FSI, 1.9 / 2.0L TDI, 2.0L SOHC / 2.5L I5 and 1.4L turbo. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my VW Jetta?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my VW Jetta?
Send us the three-letter engine code. Everything else on this car is guesswork — a 2004 Jetta 2.0L could be an AEG, AVH, AZG or BEV, and those differ in the head, the intake and the engine management.

What comes with a used VW Jetta engine?
