VW Passat Used Engines
Passat engines need the three-letter code as much as the Jetta does, and the Passat adds a complication the Jetta does not have: from 2012 the US market got its own car, built in Chattanooga on a different platform from the European Passat, with a different engine range. A European-spec engine of the same displacement and year will not fit a US Passat, so the market the car was built for is part of the order.

How to pick the right one
Three things, in order: the three-letter engine code, the model year, and whether the car is a US-built NMS Passat or an earlier European-platform B5 or B6. The 2.5L five-cylinder and the 1.8T EA888 both appeared only in the US car. On the diesels, the code again tells us the injection system — an AHU, a BHW and a CJAA are three unrelated fuel systems. If the car is a 2012–2014 TDI, note that many were bought back or modified under the emissions settlement, and the ECU calibration on a post-fix engine differs.
What usually fails on these engines
Oil sludge is the Passat failure to understand before buying: the 1.8T EA113 of the B5 coked its oil pickup on long service intervals and starved the bearings, and a large share of the engines we see came out of cars lost that way. On the 2.0T FSI BPY, the high-pressure fuel pump cam follower wears through into the camshaft. On the 2.5L five-cylinder the failures are minor by comparison — coil packs and the occasional timing chain tensioner. We inspect the oil pickup on every EA113 unit and check the cam follower on every FSI.

VW Passat used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the VW Passat use?
Across 1990 to 2022 the VW Passat was built with 2.0L I4 / 2.8L VR6, 1.9L TDI, 1.8L turbo, 2.8L V6, 4.0L W8, 2.0L TDI, 2.0L turbo FSI, 3.6L VR6 and 2.5L I5. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my VW Passat?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my VW Passat?

What comes with a used VW Passat engine?
Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
