Chevy Silverado Used Engines

Silverado engines are the single deepest part of our inventory, and they are also the easiest to order wrong. GM used the same displacement across several different blocks in the same model year — three separate 5.3L variants were sold side by side through the GMT800 years — so the displacement on its own is never enough. Every unit below is filed against the 8th-digit VIN character and, where GM split a displacement by RPO, the option code as well.

Chevy Silverado Used Engines — engine options by generation

2014–2018 (K2XX) 4.3 / 5.3 / 6.2L EcoTec3 LV3 / L83 / L86 Direct injection, AFM, variable valve timing
2019–current (T1XX) 2.7L turbo, 5.3L, 6.2L, 3.0L diesel L3B, L82/L84, L87, LM2 Dynamic Fuel Management replaces AFM on L84/L87

How to pick the right one

Read the 8th character of the VIN before anything else — on a 2005 1500 that single character separates a 4.8 LR4, three different 5.3s and two different 6.0s. If you are shopping a 2007–2013 truck, the second thing to settle is Active Fuel Management: an AFM block has the lifter oil manifold and the displacement-on-demand lifters, and dropping an AFM engine into a non-AFM harness (or the reverse) means a no-start and a stack of codes. On 2500HD and 3500 trucks also confirm whether you have the 2001-up or the earlier body, because the feed splits those as separate fitments.

What usually fails on these engines

The two failures that drive most Silverado engine replacements are AFM lifter collapse on the 2007–2014 5.3L — it usually announces itself as a tick at idle followed by a P0300 misfire on cylinder 1 or 4 — and piston ring wear with high oil consumption on the same family. On the diesels, LB7 injector failure and LML CP4 pump failure are the two that write off an engine. Every unit we list is compression and leak-down tested before it ships, and the test sheet goes in the box.

Chevy Silverado used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Chevy Silverado use?

Across 1999 to today the Chevy Silverado was built with 4.3L V6, 4.8L V8, 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 8.1L V8, 6.6L Duramax, 4.8L / 5.3L / 6.0L, 6.2L V8 and 4.3 / 5.3 / 6.2L EcoTec3. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Chevy Silverado?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Chevy Silverado?

Read the 8th character of the VIN before anything else — on a 2005 1500 that single character separates a 4.8 LR4, three different 5.3s and two different 6.0s. If you are shopping a 2007–2013 truck, the second thing to settle is Active Fuel Management: an AFM block has the lifter oil manifold and the displacement-on-demand lifters, and dropping an AFM engine into a non-AFM harness (or the reverse) means a no-start and a stack of codes.

What comes with a used Chevy Silverado engine?

Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
