Chevy Silverado Used Transmissions
Silverado transmissions are the deepest part of our transmission inventory, and they are also where the RPO option code matters most. GM fitted four-speed, six-speed, eight-speed and ten-speed automatics to this truck, often two of them in the same model year split by cab, bed and payload, and the code on the glovebox sticker is the only thing that separates them cleanly. Every unit below is filed against that code.

How to pick the right one
Read the RPO code off the glovebox or door-jamb sticker and give it to us with the model year. On this truck the code does what a VIN digit does on an engine: a 2004 1500 and a 2004 2500HD are both "4-speed automatic" and they are a 4L60E and a 4L80E, which share neither a case, a bellhousing nor an output. Then tell us gasoline or diesel and 4x2 or 4x4, because the feed splits those as separate fitments and the tailhousing and output shaft differ. On 2019-up trucks, the 10L80 and the Allison 10L1000 are both ten-speeds and are not interchangeable.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The 4L60E is the one most often replaced, and it almost always goes the same way: the 3-4 clutch pack burns, then the sun gear shell splits, and the truck loses third and fourth. It is a known weak point behind the 5.3L in a loaded truck. The 6L80 rarely fails outright but suffers torque converter shudder as the fluid degrades, which feels like a misfire at light throttle around 35 to 45 mph. The 8L90 had a well-documented shift judder that GM addressed with a revised fluid and a recalibration. The Allison, by contrast, is the strongest unit in the range. Every transmission we list is pressure tested and the solenoid body checked before it goes on the site.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.
Rebuilding instead? The 4L60E and 4L80E both have wide parts support. Replacing the engine at the same time: see our Silverado used engines. Full terms are in the transmission warranty policy, and the complete catalogue is at used transmissions.
Chevy Silverado used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Chevy Silverado use?
Across 1999 to today the Chevy Silverado was built with 4L60E / 4L65E, 4L80E / 4L85E, Allison 1000, NV3500 / NV4500 / NV5600, 6L80, 6L90, 6L80 / 6L90, 8L90 and 8L80 / 8L90. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Chevy Silverado?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Chevy Silverado?
Read the RPO code off the glovebox or door-jamb sticker and give it to us with the model year. On this truck the code does what a VIN digit does on an engine: a 2004 1500 and a 2004 2500HD are both "4-speed automatic" and they are a 4L60E and a 4L80E, which share neither a case, a bellhousing nor an output.
What usually fails on these transmissions?
The 4L60E is the one most often replaced, and it almost always goes the same way: the 3-4 clutch pack burns, then the sun gear shell splits, and the truck loses third and fourth. It is a known weak point behind the 5.3L in a loaded truck.
What comes with a used Chevy Silverado transmission?
Every transmission is pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded and the test sheet ships in the box. The unit is matched to your VIN and option code before the order goes out, carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
