Ford Explorer Used Engines
The Explorer is a thirty-year nameplate that changed platform three times, so the engine you need depends almost entirely on which generation you have. The key break is 2011: everything before it is a rear-drive-based truck with the Cologne V6 or a Modular V8, everything after is a front-drive unibody with the Cyclone V6 or an EcoBoost four. A 2010 engine will not go into a 2011 Explorer in any form.

How to pick the right one
Settle the generation first, then the 8th VIN digit. The one that catches people is the 4.0L: the OHV and SOHC engines are both "4.0L V6" in a listing and are completely different engines — different block, different heads, and the SOHC has its timing chain cassette at the rear of the block. If you are buying a 2011–2019 car, also confirm naturally aspirated against EcoBoost, because the 3.5L Duratec and the 3.5L EcoBoost share a displacement and nothing else.
What usually fails on these engines
The 1997–2010 4.0L SOHC is defined by one failure: the rear timing chain guide and tensioner wear out, the chain rattles on a cold start, and because the cassette sits behind the engine the repair means pulling the transmission. That is why so many of these get replaced rather than fixed. On the 2011-up 3.5L EcoBoost, the issues are the timing chain and condensate-driven misfire under boost in humid conditions. We pressure test every EcoBoost intercooler circuit and note the timing chain condition on every SOHC unit.

Which engines did the Ford Explorer use?
Across 1991 to today the Ford Explorer was built with 4.0L OHV V6, 4.0L OHV / 4.0L SOHC V6, 5.0L V8, 4.0L SOHC V6, 4.6L V8, 3.5L V6, 2.0L / 2.3L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost and 2.3L / 3.0L EcoBoost. How do I know which engine is in my Ford Explorer?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
Will an engine from a different year fit my Ford Explorer?
