Ford Taurus Used Transmissions
Taurus transmissions divide cleanly at 2008. Everything before it is the AXOD family — AXOD, AXOD-E, AX4S and AX4N, which are one evolving transverse four-speed under four names. From 2008 the car moved to the six-speed 6F50, and from 2010 the SHO and the EcoBoost cars brought their own variants. Because several of these cars listed an identical "4-speed automatic", the model year and the engine together are what identify the part.
Ford Taurus Used Transmissions — transmission options by generation
| Years | Transmission | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1990–1994 | AXOD / AXOD-E | 4-speed auto | Behind the 3.0 Vulcan and 3.8 Essex |

| 1995–1999 | AX4S / AX4N | 4-speed auto | AX4N is the non-synchronous, smoother unit |
| 2000–2007 | AX4N / 4F50N | 4-speed auto | Same unit renamed |
| 2008–2009 | 6F50 | 6-speed auto | First six-speed Taurus |
| 2010–2019 | 6F50 / 6F55 | 6-speed auto | 55 behind the 3.5 EcoBoost SHO |
| 2013–2019 | 6F35 | 6-speed auto | 2.0 EcoBoost, front-drive only |
How to pick the right one
Model year and engine. Inside the AXOD family the AX4S and AX4N share a case and differ in the planetary arrangement and the valve body, and they are not drop-in substitutes even in the same model year. On 2010-up cars, separate the 6F50 from the 6F55 — the 55 is the heavier unit behind the twin-turbo SHO — and tell us front-drive or all-wheel-drive, because the all-wheel-drive version carries a different output and transfer case. Final drive ratio appears in many of our listings and is worth matching where you have it.
What usually fails on these transmissions
The AXOD-E is the weak one: the forward clutch and the drive chain wear, and the chain stretching is what usually ends it. The AX4N is a better unit and routinely outlasts the body. On the 6F50, the pump and the torque converter are the common failures, typically announced by a shudder at light throttle before anything else. Several of these cars also come in with a cooler line or radiator cooler failure that killed an otherwise good transmission, so if yours went suddenly it is worth checking the cooling circuit before fitting a replacement.
What ships with every unit
- Pressure tested with the solenoid readings recorded, and the fluid condition inspected and reported.
- Fitment matched — send us the model year, engine, drivetrain and the RPO option code or ID tag and we confirm the part before the order ships.
- Written warranty on every transmission, with labour coverage available.
- Free freight anywhere in the lower 48, crated on a pallet to a commercial address or a terminal.

Ford Taurus used transmissions - frequently asked questions
Which transmissions did the Ford Taurus use?
Across 1990 to 2019 the Ford Taurus was built with AXOD / AXOD-E, MTX-IV, AX4S / AX4N, AX4N / 4F50N, 6F50, 6F50 / 6F55 and 6F35. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the transmission designation and option code that identifies it.
How do I identify the right transmission for my Ford Taurus?
Four things decide it: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the option or RPO code. That code is the one most people do not have to hand and the one that settles it - on a GM vehicle it is on the glovebox or door-jamb sticker, on a Chrysler it is on the build sheet, and on a Ford it is on a tag on the case. Send us the VIN and the code and we confirm the unit before anything ships.
Will a transmission from a different year fit my Ford Taurus?
