Ford Transit Used Engines
Transit listings cover two different vehicles and it is worth knowing which one you have before you shop. The full-size Transit, sold here from 2015, is a rear-drive van built on Ford truck engines - the 3.7 Cyclone V6, the 3.5 EcoBoost twin-turbo and the 3.2 five-cylinder Power Stroke diesel, with the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel arriving for 2020. The Transit Connect is a smaller front-drive van on a car platform and shares nothing with it mechanically. Both appear in our stock and both are listed below.

How to pick the right one
First tell us full-size Transit or Transit Connect, because nothing crosses between them. On a full-size van the 3.7 and the 3.5 EcoBoost are both V6s and look similar in the bay, but the EcoBoost carries turbochargers, a different intake and a different sump - fitting one in place of the other is an engine, harness and cooling job, not a swap. The 3.2 Power Stroke is a five-cylinder diesel and a dedicated part. From 2020 the 3.5 PFDi replaced the 3.7 and is not interchangeable with it despite the shared displacement family. On a Connect, the 2.0 Duratec of the first generation and the 2.5 of the second are different engines in different vans. Send us the VIN and we read the eighth character against your van before anything ships.
What usually fails on these engines
On the 3.5 EcoBoost the known items are the timing chain and its guides, the turbo coolant lines and carbon build-up on the intake valves in a direct-injection engine that has only ever done city work - a van that idles for a living is the worst case for all three. The 3.7 Cyclone is the durable one and what usually brings it in is the water pump, which is driven off the timing chain and dumps coolant into the crankcase when its seal goes, so check the oil for coolant before you condemn the block. The 3.2 Power Stroke is sensitive to fuel quality and injector failure is the common complaint rather than a mechanical failure. On the Transit Connect 2.0 and 2.5, timing chain tensioner wear is the usual reason for replacement. Every engine here is compression and leak-down tested first.

Ford Transit used engines - frequently asked questions
Which engines did the Ford Transit use?
Across 2010 to today the Ford Transit was built with 3.7L Cyclone V6, 3.5L EcoBoost V6, 3.2L Power Stroke I5, 3.5L PFDi V6, 2.0L EcoBlue I4, 2.0L Duratec I4, 2.5L Duratec I4, 1.6L EcoBoost I4 and 2.0L GDI I4. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.
How do I know which engine is in my Ford Transit?
The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
