Honda CR-V Used Engines

CR-V engines run through three families and the lines are clean. The 1997-2001 car uses the B20 two-litre, the 2002-2014 cars the K24 2.4 in several versions, and from 2017 the turbocharged 1.5 L15BE sits alongside a naturally aspirated 2.4. Our feed spells the model without the hyphen, so listings read CRV rather than CR-V - if you have been searching with the hyphen and finding nothing, that is why. Element and Accord K24 engines of the matching years are closely related parts.

How to pick the right one

Model year and engine code. The B20 to K24 change at 2002 and the port-injection K24 to the direct-injection K24W at 2015 are both absolute. Within the K24 years the A1, Z1 and Z6 differ in camshafts, intake manifold and valve timing hardware, so match the generation rather than just the displacement - a K24A1 out of a 2003 car will not simply drop into a 2012. On a 2017-onward car, tell us 1.5 turbo or 2.4, because both were sold in the same years. Send the VIN and we confirm the engine code off the build data before anything ships.

What usually fails on these engines

The K24 is one of the better four-cylinders Honda built and most of them are replaced for neglect rather than design. The items worth knowing: the exhaust cam variable timing actuator rattles briefly on a cold start, the valves need adjusting on a mechanical-lifter engine and a noisy one is often just out of spec, and the rear main seal weeps on higher-mileage units. On the 1.5 L15BE turbo, the known issue is fuel dilution of the oil in cold-climate short-trip use - Honda issued a software and hardware update for it, and the symptom is an oil level that rises and smells of petrol. If you are buying a 1.5 turbo, that update matters more than mileage. Every engine here is compression and leak-down tested.

Honda CR-V used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Honda CR-V use?

Across 1997 to 2022 the Honda CR-V was built with B20B4 2.0L I4, B20Z2 2.0L I4, K24A1 2.4L I4, K24Z1 2.4L I4, K24Z6 2.4L I4, K24W9 2.4L I4, L15BE 1.5L turbo and K24W 2.4L I4. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Honda CR-V?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Honda CR-V?
