Nissan Pathfinder Used Engines

The Pathfinder changed character twice and the engines changed with it. Through 2004 it was a body-on-frame truck with the VG30E and VG33E pushrod V6s. The 2005-2012 truck shares its platform and engines with the Frontier and Xterra - the VQ40DE 4.0 V6, with a VK56DE 5.6 V8 in the top trims. From 2013 the Pathfinder is a front-drive-based crossover with the VQ35DE, and from 2017 the direct-injection VQ35DD. Those three eras share nothing mechanically.

How to pick the right one

Establish the generation, because three different vehicles wear this badge. The 2012 to 2013 line is the biggest: before it the engine is longitudinal in a body-on-frame truck, after it transverse in a crossover, and no VQ40DE will go into an R52. Within the 2005-2012 truck, tell us V6 or V8 - the VK56DE is a separate engine with its own accessory layout. On the later crossover, the VQ35DE and the VQ35DD are different engines: the DD is direct injected with a different head, different fuel system and different management. Send us the VIN and we confirm the engine code off the build data.

What usually fails on these engines

On the 2005-2012 trucks the thing to check before buying anything is the radiator: it can fail internally and push coolant into the transmission, which kills the transmission rather than the engine, and Nissan extended coverage on it. Milky transmission fluid is the giveaway. On the VQ40DE itself the items are the timing chain guides and tensioner and a leaking timing cover. On the 2013-onward crossover the usual failure is the CVT rather than the engine, and Nissan extended CVT coverage to ten years or 120,000 miles on a number of build ranges - so a Pathfinder that shudders under acceleration is worth diagnosing properly before you replace an engine. The VG33E is a belt engine; fit a belt and pump with any one you buy. Every engine is tested before listing.

Nissan Pathfinder used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Nissan Pathfinder use?

Across 1990 to today the Nissan Pathfinder was built with VG30E 3.0L V6, VG33E 3.3L V6, VQ40DE 4.0L V6, VK56DE 5.6L V8, VQ35DE 3.5L V6 and VQ35DD 3.5L V6. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Nissan Pathfinder?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Nissan Pathfinder?
