Toyota RAV4 Used Engines

RAV4 engines follow Toyota's usual pattern of a clean family progression, and the order is 3S-FE, 1AZ-FE, 2AZ-FE, 2AR-FE, A25A-FKS. The one that needs the most care is the 2.4L 2AZ-FE, which ran from 2001 to 2012 across two body generations and has a known block weakness that Toyota revised mid-run. The outlier is the 3.5L V6 of the 2006–2012 car, which made the RAV4 unexpectedly quick and is a standalone part.

Toyota RAV4 Used Engines — engine options by generation

Years Engine Family / VIN code Notes

2001–2003 (XA20) 2.0L I4 1AZ-FE First of the AZ family, timing chain
2004–2005 (XA20) 2.4L I4 2AZ-FE Replaced the 1AZ, 161 hp
2006–2012 (XA30) 2.4L I4 2AZ-FE Head bolt thread pull — see below
2006–2012 (XA30) 3.5L V6 2GR-FE 269 hp — standalone part
2009–2012 (XA30) 2.5L I4 2AR-FE Replaced the 2AZ in 2009
2013–2018 (XA40) 2.5L I4 2AR-FE The volume engine of this generation
2016–2018 (XA40) 2.5L hybrid 2AR-FXE Atkinson cycle — not a 2AR-FE substitute
2019–current (XA50) 2.5L I4 A25A-FKS Dynamic Force, direct and port injection
2019–current (XA50) 2.5L hybrid A25A-FXS Atkinson cycle hybrid

How to pick the right one

Order against the engine family code and give us the model year. The 2.4L 2AZ-FE ran from 2004 to 2012 and the cylinder head and intake changed between the XA20 and XA30 bodies, so the year matters as much as the code. The 2009 changeover from 2AZ-FE to 2AR-FE inside the same body generation is the other thing to check — a 2008 and a 2010 RAV4 do not share an engine. On hybrids, the FXE and FXS units are Atkinson cycle with different compression ratios and cannot substitute for the conventional engine.

What usually fails on these engines

The 2AZ-FE has the well-documented aluminium block weakness: the head bolt threads pull out of the block, coolant disappears with no external leak, and the head gasket then fails. Toyota revised the block during the run and the later casting is the better buy; we note it where it is identifiable. The 2AR-FE is a clean engine and what we see is water pump and VVT solenoid wear. On the 2GR-FE, the VVT-i oil supply line is the one real weak point and we replace it on every 2GR we ship.

Toyota RAV4 used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Toyota RAV4 use?

Across 1996 to today the Toyota RAV4 was built with 2.0L I4, 2.4L I4, 3.5L V6, 2.5L I4 and 2.5L hybrid. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Toyota RAV4?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.

Will an engine from a different year fit my Toyota RAV4?

Order against the engine family code and give us the model year. The 2.4L 2AZ-FE ran from 2004 to 2012 and the cylinder head and intake changed between the XA20 and XA30 bodies, so the year matters as much as the code.

What comes with a used Toyota RAV4 engine?

Every engine is compression and leak-down tested before it is listed and the test sheet ships in the box. Fitment is VIN matched before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty with labour coverage available, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
