Toyota Sienna Used Engines

Sienna engines are Camry and Highlander engines, which is good news for availability - the same V6 families run through all three, so the pool is deep. There are four of them. The 1998-2003 van uses the 1MZ-FE 3.0, the 2004-2006 the 3MZ-FE 3.3, the 2007-2016 the 2GR-FE 3.5 and the 2017-2020 the 2GR-FKS with direct injection. A four-cylinder 2AZ-FE was offered briefly on the 2011-2012 van. From 2021 the Sienna is hybrid only.

How to pick the right one

Model year does most of the work, and the two lines to respect are 2006 to 2007 (belt to chain, 3.3 to 3.5) and 2016 to 2017 (port injection to the dual-injection 2GR-FKS). Neither crosses. If your van is a 2011 or 2012, tell us four-cylinder or V6, because both were sold. From 2021 the hybrid A25A-FXS is a dedicated Atkinson-cycle engine and no conventional 2.5 will substitute. Highlander and Camry engines of the same generation are the same parts, so check those listings if your year is thin here. Send the VIN and we read the engine code off the build.

What usually fails on these engines

The 1MZ-FE and 3MZ-FE are timing belt engines on a 90,000-mile interval, and the commonest reason one is replaced is a belt that was never changed - fit a belt, water pump, tensioner and idler with any one you buy, because the access is free with the engine out. The 1MZ of the late nineties also had an oil sludge problem that Toyota addressed with extended coverage at the time; buy a tested unit rather than a cheap one. The 2GR-FE is the strongest of the group and its known item is the oil cooler line and the variable valve timing camshaft actuator, which rattles briefly on start-up. On the 2GR-FE there was also a documented oil leak at the timing cover and at the VVT-i hose, which Toyota revised - a cheap part worth replacing while the engine is out. Every engine is compression and leak-down tested.

Toyota Sienna used engines - frequently asked questions

Which engines did the Toyota Sienna use?

Across 1998 to today the Toyota Sienna was built with 1MZ-FE 3.0L V6, 3MZ-FE 3.3L V6, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6, 2AZ-FE 2.4L I4, 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6 and A25A-FXS 2.5L hybrid. The table above lists which one belongs to each generation, with the engine family and VIN character that identifies it.

How do I know which engine is in my Toyota Sienna?

The eighth character of the VIN encodes the engine on almost every US vehicle, and that is the only reliable way to settle it - two cars of the same year and trim can carry different engines. Send us the VIN and we check the engine code against your vehicle before anything ships.
