Ford E150 Used Engines
These are engines for the Ford E150, the half-ton van Ford sold as the Econoline for most of its life and badged E-Series in its later years. Buyers, workshops and parts catalogues use all three names for the same vehicle, and the passenger versions were sold as the Club Wagon. The listings here are titled by model number rather than by trim, so an Econoline, an E-Series and a Club Wagon of the same year carrying the same engine code all point at the same part.
The listings run from 1990 to 2014 and split hard at 1997. Through 1996 the E150 was offered with the 4.9 litre inline six, the 5.0 litre V8 and the 5.8 litre Windsor V8 — all pushrod engines. From 1997 the range changed over completely to the 4.2 litre V6 and the modular overhead-cam V8s, the 4.6 and the 5.4 Triton. Nothing crosses that line. Worth saying plainly, because it is the most common wrong assumption on this van: there is no diesel and no V10 anywhere in the E150 range. The 7.3 and 6.0 diesels and the 6.8 V10 belong to the heavier E350 and E450 chassis.
Ford E150 Econoline used engines — options by year
| Years listed | Engine | VIN code (8th digit) | Notes |

| 1990–1996 | 5.0L V8 | N | Pushrod small block |

| 1997–1998 | 4.6L V8 | 6 | Split by 6 bolt and 8 bolt flywheel |
| 1999–2014 | 4.6L V8 | W | Romeo built — the long-running 4.6 |

| 1997–2014 | 5.4L V8 | L | Triton — the volume engine of the later van |
Alongside the gasoline engines there are dedicated alternative-fuel units, listed separately because they are not interchangeable with the gasoline engine of the same displacement: 4.9 litre LPG engines for 1995 and 1996 under VIN 9 or VIN Z, identified further by engine ID EK-256-AA or XK-258-AA; 5.4 litre CNG engines under VIN M; 5.4 litre SOHC bi-fuel engines under VIN Z; and from 2010 CNG, LPG and E85 flex-fuel versions of the 5.4 listed apart from the plain gasoline engine.
How to pick the right one
Settle the generation first — through 1996, or 1997 onward — because no engine crosses it. After that the eighth character of the VIN is what identifies the engine, and on this van it does more work than usual, because the same displacement appears under more than one code. The 4.6 is the clearest case: VIN 6 for 1997 and 1998, VIN W for the Romeo-built engine from 1999, and VIN F listed alongside VIN W from 2007. Those are not one engine with three names.
Several real fitment splits sit inside a single model year and are easy to miss. The 1997 and 1998 4.6 is divided by flywheel bolt count, 6 bolt against 8 bolt. The 2002 4.6 splits on build date and intake manifold casting, intake ID 1L1E-9K461-AA through 1/13/02 and 2L1E-9K461-BB from 1/14/02. The 2009 engines split at 11/30/08 and 12/01/08. On the earlier six, 1991 divides at 2/2/91 and 2/3/91, with the air injection either in the cylinder head or in the manifold, and the listings also separate engines built for the E4OD transmission from those without it. From 2000 to 2006 the 5.4 is listed with and without an EGR valve. Send the VIN and we confirm the engine code against your vehicle before the order ships.
What usually goes wrong on these engines
The 4.9 inline six is the durable one in this group and generally gets replaced after neglect rather than from a design fault — overheating that warps or cracks the head, or a timing gear worn past its limit. The 5.0 and the 5.8 Windsor are the same story, straightforward pushrod V8s whose usual exit is a head gasket after a cooling system was left too long.
The modular V8s have two documented weak points that account for most replacements. On the two-valve 5.4 and 4.6, the spark plug threads can pull out of the aluminium cylinder head, because the plug is held by only a few threads in the casting — a plug ejecting under load is the signature failure and it damages the head, not just the plug. The other is the 4.6 intake manifold, which has a plastic coolant crossover that cracks and dumps coolant; that is a manifold repair rather than an engine, so diagnose it before buying a long block. Timing chain guides and tensioners on both engines wear and rattle on cold start, and a chain that has jumped is a reason these get swapped. On the 4.2 V6 the head gasket and the lower intake gasket are the common coolant leaks. Every unit we list is listed as tested and ready to install.

Ford E150 used engines — frequently asked questions
Is the Ford E150 the same vehicle as the Econoline?
Yes. Ford sold this van as the Econoline for most of its production and badged it E-Series in later years, and the passenger versions were sold as the Club Wagon. The listings here are titled by model number, so an E150, an Econoline 150 and a Club Wagon of the same year with the same engine code take the same part.
Which engines did the Ford E150 use?
Through 1996 the 4.9L inline six (VIN Y), the 5.0L V8 (VIN N) and the 5.8L Windsor V8 (VIN H). From 1997 the 4.2L V6 (VIN 2), the 4.6L V8 (VIN 6, then VIN W and VIN F) and the 5.4L Triton V8 (VIN L). There are also dedicated LPG, CNG, bi-fuel and E85 flex-fuel units listed separately.
Was the Ford E150 ever offered with a diesel or a V10?
No. Nothing in the E150 range is a diesel and none of it is a V10. The 7.3 and 6.0 litre diesels and the 6.8 litre V10 were fitted to the heavier E350 and E450 chassis, so if you are looking for one of those you want those listings instead.
Why are there two different 4.6L engines in the same year?
Because the same displacement was built to more than one specification. VIN 6 covers 1997 and 1998, the Romeo-built VIN W runs from 1999, and VIN F is listed alongside VIN W from 2007. The eighth character of the VIN is how you tell them apart, and the 1997 and 1998 engine divides again by flywheel bolt count, 6 bolt against 8 bolt.
What comes with a used Ford E150 engine?
Each listing states its condition and its mileage options. Fitment is matched to your VIN before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty of 3 months on units up to and including model year 2000 and 6 months on 2001 and newer, extendable to 3 years, parts only, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
