Ford E250 Used Engines
These are engines for the Ford E250, the three-quarter-ton van in the family Ford sold as the Econoline and later badged E-Series, with the passenger versions carried as the Club Wagon. The E250 is the middle of the range — heavier rated than the E150, lighter than the E350 — and the engine list reflects that: it shares most of its range with the E150 but picks up two heavy-duty options the lighter van never had.
The listings run from 1990 to 2014 and split at 1997, the same break as the rest of the family. Through 1996 the engines are pushrod — the 4.9 litre inline six, the 5.0 litre V8, the 5.8 litre Windsor V8, and in 1990 and 1991 only, the 7.5 litre big block and the 7.3 litre diesel. From 1997 the range changes over to the 4.2 litre V6 and the modular overhead-cam V8s, the 4.6 and the 5.4 Triton, and stays there to the end. Nothing crosses 1997.
Ford E250 Econoline used engines — options by year
| Years listed | Engine | VIN code (8th digit) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1990–1996 | 4.9L inline six | Y | The 300 cubic inch six, gasoline |
| 1990–1991 | 5.0L V8 | N | Early years only |
| 1990–1996 | 5.8L V8 | H | Windsor, listed as 8-351W |
| 1990–1991 | 7.5L V8 | G | The 460 big block, early years only |
| 1990–1991 | 7.3L V8 diesel | M | The mechanical IDI diesel, not a Power Stroke |
| 1997–2003 | 4.2L V6 | 2 | The base engine of the later van |
| 2003–2014 | 4.6L V8 | W | Romeo built |
| 2007–2014 | 4.6L V8 | F | Listed alongside VIN W in the same years |
| 1997–2014 | 5.4L V8 | L | Triton — the volume engine of the later van |
Two points on that table are worth pulling out, because both cut against what people expect. The 7.5 litre big block and the 7.3 litre diesel appear in the E250 for 1990 and 1991 and then stop — after 1991 the heavy options moved up to the E350 chassis. And the 7.3 diesel listed here under VIN M is the mechanically injected IDI engine, which is a different engine from the 7.3 Power Stroke that arrived in 1995 under VIN F. They share a displacement and nothing else that matters to a buyer.
Alongside the gasoline engines there are dedicated alternative-fuel units, listed separately because they do not interchange with the gasoline engine of the same displacement: 4.9 litre LPG engines for 1995 and 1996 under VIN 9 or VIN Z, identified further by engine ID EK-256-AA or XK-258-AA; 5.4 litre CNG engines under VIN M; 5.4 litre bi-fuel engines under VIN Z; and from 2010 CNG, LPG and E85 flex-fuel versions of the 5.4 listed apart from the plain gasoline engine.
How to pick the right one
Settle the generation first, through 1996 or 1997 onward, then read the eighth character of the VIN. On this van there is one split that exists nowhere else in the family and catches people out: in 1997 and 1998 the 5.4 litre engine is divided by gross vehicle weight rating, listed as through 8500 GVW and from 8501 GVW. Same year, same displacement, same VIN character, two different parts. The rating is on the door jamb sticker, and if you order on year and engine alone you have a coin-flip chance of the wrong one.
The other splits are the family-wide ones. On the 1991 to 1996 six, listings separate engines built for the E4OD transmission from those without it, and divide again by whether the air injection sits in the cylinder head or in the manifold. From 2000 to 2006 the 5.4 is listed with and without an EGR valve. The 2009 engines split on build date at 11/30/08 and 12/01/08. Note too that the 4.6 arrives later on the E250 than on the E150 — VIN W from 2003 rather than 1999 — so an E150 parts list is not a safe guide. Send the VIN and we confirm the engine code against your vehicle before the order ships.
What usually goes wrong on these engines
The 4.9 inline six and the pushrod V8s are the durable end of this range. They are generally replaced after neglect rather than from a design fault — a head warped or cracked by overheating, or a head gasket that went after a cooling system was left too long. The 7.5 big block is the same, mechanically unstressed and usually retired for fuel consumption rather than failure. The 7.3 IDI diesel is a low-output mechanical engine with no electronics to fail; where it does need replacing the cause is usually a cracked head or a cylinder wall worn past limit after a very long life.
The modular V8s are the ones with documented systemic faults, and they account for most of the replacements in the later years. On the two-valve 5.4 and 4.6 the spark plug threads can strip out of the aluminium cylinder head — the plug is retained by only a few threads in the casting, and one ejecting under load damages the head rather than just the plug. The 4.6 intake manifold has a plastic coolant crossover that cracks and loses coolant, which is a manifold job and not an engine, so confirm which it is before buying a long block. Timing chain guides and tensioners on both engines wear and rattle on a cold start. On the 4.2 V6 the head gasket and the lower intake gasket are the usual coolant leaks. Every unit we list is listed as tested and ready to install.

Ford E250 used engines — frequently asked questions
Is the Ford E250 the same vehicle as the Econoline 250?
Yes. Ford sold this van as the Econoline for most of its production and badged it E-Series later, with passenger versions carried as the Club Wagon. The listings here are titled by model number, so an E250, an Econoline 250 and a Club Wagon of the same year with the same engine code take the same part.
Which engines did the Ford E250 use?
Through 1996 the 4.9L inline six (VIN Y), the 5.0L V8 (VIN N), the 5.8L Windsor V8 (VIN H), and in 1990 and 1991 only the 7.5L V8 (VIN G) and the 7.3L IDI diesel (VIN M). From 1997 the 4.2L V6 (VIN 2), the 4.6L V8 (VIN W, then VIN F) and the 5.4L Triton V8 (VIN L), plus dedicated LPG, CNG, bi-fuel and E85 units listed separately.
What is the 8500 GVW split on the 1997 and 1998 5.4L?
It is a real fitment difference, not a labelling quirk. The 1997 and 1998 5.4 litre engine is listed in two versions, one for vans rated through 8500 GVW and one for vans rated from 8501 GVW, with the same VIN character on both. Your gross vehicle weight rating is on the door jamb sticker, and it has to be matched.
Is the 7.3L diesel in an early E250 a Power Stroke?
No. The 7.3 litre diesel listed for the 1990 and 1991 E250 is the mechanically injected IDI engine, VIN M. The 7.3 Power Stroke is a different engine that arrived in 1995 under VIN F and was fitted to the heavier E350 and E450 chassis. They share a displacement and very little else.
What comes with a used Ford E250 engine?
Each listing states its condition and its mileage options. Fitment is matched to your VIN before the order goes out, every engine carries a written warranty of 3 months on units up to and including model year 2000 and 6 months on 2001 and newer, extendable to 3 years, parts only, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
