Ford E150 Used Transmissions
These are automatic transmissions for the Ford E150, the half-ton van sold as the Econoline for most of its life and badged E-Series later on, with the passenger versions carried as the Club Wagon. Every unit listed here is an automatic — there is no manual gearbox in this range — and the listings run from 2000 to 2014.
Three gearbox families cover the whole span, and they are not interchangeable. The 4R70W is the early unit, the 4R75E takes over from 2005, and a single 4R100 application appears behind the 5.4 in 2000. The 4R100 is the heavy-duty case used widely on the bigger E350 and E450 chassis, which is why finding one listed against an E150 surprises people — it is a real fitment, not a mislabel.
Ford E150 Econoline used transmissions — options by year
| Years listed | Transmission | Engine it was built behind | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000–2004 | 4R70W | 6-255 (4.2L), 8-280 (4.6L), 8-330 (5.4L) | Four speed, the early unit |
| 2000 | 4R100 | 8-330 (5.4L) | Heavy-duty case, ID YC2P-EA |
| 2005–2014 | 4R75E | 8-280 (4.6L), 8-330 (5.4L) | Four speed with electronic control |
The 4.2 litre V6 pairing, listed as 6-255, only appears through 2003. From 2004 every listing is behind one of the two modular V8s, the 4.6 shown as 8-280 or the 5.4 shown as 8-330.
How to pick the right one
A used automatic is matched on three things together, and missing any one of them is the usual reason a gearbox arrives and will not go in. First the family — 4R70W, 4R75E or 4R100 — because the cases and the electronics differ. Second the engine it was built behind, which these listings give as a cubic-inch and displacement pair: 6-255 for the 4.2, 8-280 for the 4.6, 8-330 for the 5.4. The bellhousing and the torque converter follow the engine, so a 4.6 unit will not bolt to a 5.4.
Third, and the one most often skipped, the assembly ID code printed on the tag. Ford changed calibration and internals inside a single model year and the ID is the only thing that separates the versions. The clearest examples here are 2005, where the same gearbox behind the same engine is listed under both 5C2P and 5C2J prefixes, and 2012 through 2014, where AC2P and CC2P units sit side by side behind the same 5.4. Read the tag on the unit you are replacing if you still have it, and send the VIN either way, and we confirm the code against your vehicle before the order ships.
What usually goes wrong on these transmissions
The 4R70W and 4R75E are the same basic design and they fail in the same places. The forward clutch and the intermediate band wear, which shows up as a slip or a flare on the shift between second and third rather than as a hard failure. The overdrive servo and its seals are a known leak point. On the electronically controlled 4R75E the solenoid pack and the output shaft speed sensor cause shift faults that feel exactly like a worn gearbox but are not, so get the codes read before you buy a unit — an electrical fault diagnosed as mechanical is the most expensive mistake on this vehicle.
These vans do heavy work, and the most common underlying cause of a dead gearbox here is heat rather than mileage. A cooler that has silted up, or a van that spent its life loaded without an auxiliary cooler, cooks the fluid and the clutch material goes with it. If the old unit burned, flush the cooler and the lines before the replacement goes in, because the debris left behind will take the new one out the same way. The 4R100 is a stronger case than either four speed, and its usual weak point is the torque converter rather than the gearsets. Every unit we list is listed as tested and ready to install.

Ford E150 used transmissions — frequently asked questions
Which automatic transmissions did the Ford E150 use?
The 4R70W four speed from 2000 to 2004, the 4R75E from 2005 to 2014, and a heavy-duty 4R100 behind the 5.4 litre V8 in 2000. All are automatics — there is no manual gearbox listed for this van.
What do the numbers 6-255, 8-280 and 8-330 mean?
They are the engine the gearbox was built behind, given as cylinder count and cubic inches. 6-255 is the 4.2 litre V6, 8-280 is the 4.6 litre V8 and 8-330 is the 5.4 litre V8. The bellhousing and torque converter follow the engine, so the pairing has to match.
Why do two transmissions for the same year and engine have different ID codes?
Because Ford changed calibration and internals inside a model year. In 2005 the same gearbox behind the same engine appears under both 5C2P and 5C2J prefixes, and from 2012 to 2014 AC2P and CC2P units are listed side by side behind the 5.4. The ID on the tag is what separates them.
Will an E250 or E350 transmission fit my E150?
Not as a rule. The heavier vans use different gearbox families, including the 5R110W TorqShift and the 6R140, and from 2005 their listings are also split by wheelbase. The one genuine overlap is the 4R100, which appears behind the 5.4 on both the E150 and the heavier chassis. Match on family, engine pairing and ID code rather than on model badge.
What comes with a used Ford E150 transmission?
Each listing states its condition and its mileage options. Fitment is matched to your VIN before the order goes out, every unit carries a written warranty of 3 months on units up to and including model year 2000 and 6 months on 2001 and newer, extendable to 3 years, parts only, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
