Ford E250 Used Transmissions
These are automatic transmissions for the Ford E250, the three-quarter-ton van in the family Ford sold as the Econoline and later badged E-Series, with passenger versions carried as the Club Wagon. Every unit here is an automatic — no manual gearbox is listed for this van — and the listings run from 2000 to 2014.
Four gearbox families appear across that span, one more than the lighter E150 carries. The 4R70W and the 4R75E are the mainstream four speeds, the 4R75W is a single-year variant in 2004, and the 4R100 is the heavy-duty case used behind the 5.4 litre V8 from 2000 to 2004. That last one is the practical difference between this van and an E150: the E250 was rated to pull more, and the heavy case was fitted to match.
Ford E250 Econoline used transmissions — options by year
| Years listed | Transmission | Engine it was built behind | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000–2004 | 4R100 | 8-330 (5.4L) | Heavy-duty four speed |
| 2000–2005 | 4R70W | 6-255 (4.2L), 8-280 (4.6L), 8-330 (5.4L) | Four speed, the early mainstream unit |
| 2004 | 4R75W | 8-330 (5.4L) | One year only, IDs 4C2P-DA and 4C2P-MA |
| 2005–2014 | 4R75E | 8-280 (4.6L), 8-330 (5.4L) | Four speed with electronic control |
The 4.2 litre V6 pairing, listed as 6-255, runs through 2003 only. The 4.6 litre pairing shown as 8-280 starts in 2003, which mirrors the engine listings — the 4.6 arrives later on the E250 than on the E150. The 5.4 litre pairing, 8-330, is present across the whole span.
How to pick the right one
Three things have to agree, and a gearbox that fails to fit has usually missed one of them. The family first — 4R100, 4R70W, 4R75W or 4R75E — because the cases, the mountings and the electronics differ between them. Then the engine it was built behind, which the listings give as a cylinder-and-cubic-inch pair: 6-255 for the 4.2, 8-280 for the 4.6, 8-330 for the 5.4. The bellhousing and converter follow the engine, so a 4.6 unit will not bolt up to a 5.4.
Then the assembly ID on the tag, which is the step most often skipped and the one that decides it inside a single year. 2004 is the clearest case on this van: the 5.4 litre pairing that year is listed as a 4R100 under ID 4C2P-EA and as a 4R75W under 4C2P-DA and 4C2P-MA, three different parts in one model year behind one engine. 2001 lists three 4R100 variants behind the 5.4 under 1C2P-AA, AB and AC. Read the tag on the unit coming out if you still have it, send the VIN either way, and we confirm the code against your vehicle before the order ships.
What usually goes wrong on these transmissions
The 4R70W, 4R75W and 4R75E are one design family and they wear in the same places. The forward clutch pack and the intermediate band go first, and the symptom is a slip or a flare on the second-to-third shift rather than an outright failure. The overdrive servo and its seals leak. On the electronically controlled 4R75E, solenoid pack faults and a failing output shaft speed sensor produce shift behaviour that feels mechanical and is not — have the codes read before you commit to a unit, because an electrical fault misdiagnosed as a worn gearbox is the most expensive error available on this vehicle.
The 4R100 is a stronger case and its weak point is the torque converter rather than the gearsets, along with the overdrive planetary under sustained load. Across all four families, the dominant underlying cause on a working E250 is heat rather than distance. A silted cooler, or a van that spent its life loaded without an auxiliary cooler, cooks the fluid and takes the clutch material with it. If the unit coming out burned, flush the cooler and the lines before the replacement goes in — the debris left in the circuit will destroy the new one the same way. Every unit we list is listed as tested and ready to install.

Ford E250 used transmissions — frequently asked questions
Which automatic transmissions did the Ford E250 use?
The heavy-duty 4R100 behind the 5.4 litre V8 from 2000 to 2004, the 4R70W from 2000 to 2005, a 4R75W in 2004 only, and the 4R75E from 2005 to 2014. All are automatics — no manual gearbox is listed for this van.
What is the difference between the 4R100 and the 4R70W on this van?
The 4R100 is the heavy-duty case, fitted behind the 5.4 litre V8 on the higher-rated vans, and it is the gearbox that separates an E250 from a lighter E150. The 4R70W is the mainstream four speed used behind all three engines. They are not interchangeable.
Why does 2004 list three different transmissions behind the 5.4L?
Because Ford used more than one unit in that year. For 2004 the 5.4 litre pairing appears as a 4R100 under ID 4C2P-EA and as a 4R75W under 4C2P-DA and 4C2P-MA. Year and engine alone will not pick the right one — the ID on the tag is what decides it.
What do 6-255, 8-280 and 8-330 mean in the listings?
They identify the engine the gearbox was built behind, as cylinder count and cubic inches. 6-255 is the 4.2 litre V6, 8-280 the 4.6 litre V8 and 8-330 the 5.4 litre V8. The 4.2 pairing runs through 2003 and the 4.6 pairing starts in 2003.
What comes with a used Ford E250 transmission?
Each listing states its condition and its mileage options. Fitment is matched to your VIN before the order goes out, every unit carries a written warranty of 3 months on units up to and including model year 2000 and 6 months on 2001 and newer, extendable to 3 years, parts only, and freight is free anywhere in the lower 48.
